Great strategies to Empower the Data Driven Enterprise – at Discover London and everywhere
By Greg Chabot
Ever heard of a middleman? It’s probably the least well known, but most important position in a restaurant kitchen, since this is the person who ensures that all the food your table orders comes at the same time, perfectly cooked and at the right temperature. No mean task given that entrees take from maybe 5 to 20 minutes, while sides like French fries take only three or so. The middleman has to take all the orders, tell which cook (broil, fry, etc.) when to start which part of the meal, plate it all up and then tell the waitress it’s ready for pick-up.
If you consider that thirty, forty or more tables may be ordering at about the same time, you can understand the challenge. A lot of data coming in to one person all at once. For an experienced middleman, the data gets translated into immediate action that delivers results. For those less experienced or less skilled, the combination of massive data and pressure leads to confusion or paralysis … and late, cold dinners
The same thing is happening to today’s businesses – but on a much, much larger scale. Businesses are dealing with massive amounts of data with over 2.5 quintillion bytes of information generated worldwide every day. Also, in contrast to the usual transactional data the business has been using, perhaps 90 percent of the data available today is unstructured, making meaningful access much more difficult. In fact, the processing and analysis needed to extract value can double or triple the size of the original data set.
All of this has made Big Data and analytics a really hot area and one of the 4 Transformation Areas defined by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) that enterprises must undertake if they are to transition effectively to the New Style of Business. It’s called “Empower the Data Driven Enterprise.”
