HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 Hands-On!

Did you know that a recent AMI study predicted that there will be approximately 5.2 Million new SMB users in the next 5 years?

With these new SMBs (and existing SMBs) in mind, HP has created the HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8, the industry’s only purpose-built server and networking solution for SMB and micro-businesses.

The HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 is an ideal first server for small businesses and micro-businesses. This quiet, energy efficient, stylishly designed server helps small businesses drive down their expenses, while improving productivity, efficiency, and security, with a form factor that is easy to use and service.

We have prepared a Coffee Coaching session on this great product:

At the heart of the box, customers can choose from two Intel processors. These options provide a basic solution for Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Essentials and Foundation editions.

This server has many features that provide customers with hassle-free serviceability, including two up-front USB ports, which allow for easy deployment, as well as tool-less access to hard drives, memory, and PCI slots for simple installation. In addition, the MicroServer Gen8 has system health status LEDs, which provide users with convenient, at-a-glance notification of the status and health of key internal system components within the server

This box comes with seven USB ports (2 USB 2.0 front/2 USB 3.0 and 2 USB 2.0 rear/1 USB 2.0) and micro SD internally, and offers a max capacity of 16GB of RAM (with a base configuration of 2GB). **Note: for Windows Server 2012 Foundation Edition users will need 4GB of RAM while Essentials Edition requires 8GB or RAM. It is important to remember that this is Error Correcting Code (ECC) RAM, which Windows Server certification requires for its server class operating systems.

Let’s now take a closer look at the HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8. The first thing you will probably notice when looking at this server is its sleek design. Users get an option of four colors for the front bezel: silver, black, red, or blue. By removing the front bezel, users have easy access to the 4 x 3.5” non-hot plug SATA drive bays (with total capacity of 12TB of storage) and supporting RAID 0/1/or 10.

MicroServer Gen8 back of server.JPGThe back of the server features the integrated 150W power supply and the large fan that allows the unit to run whisper quiet at 21 DCP, even when fully loaded, making it ideal for small offices. On the back customers will also find 2 x 1 Gb NICs, video and power cord connections, and a dedicated iLO4 port.

HP Integrated Lights-Out 4 (iLO4) is HP’s award winning offering that allows customers access to manage their server remotely. This is the same management suite seen on all of HP’s enterprise class servers. iLO4 and instant out-of-box server set up and deployment, along with embedded remote management technology, work together to provide users with simplified IT management.

Compatible with the HP PS1810 Switch Series, the HP MicroServer Gen8 has a unique chassis design for the 8-port managed switch that enables physical stacking. In addition, the user-friendly interface on HP PS1810 Switch Series allows for a consolidated view of servers and switches in the network so workloads can be prioritized. These features are just a few that give users seamless network connectivity.

For first server scenarios, the HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 provides Intelligent provisioning for easy setup, an energy efficient, compact, and quiet design, along with simple, ongoing maintenance with Active Health Monitoring, smart update, and many other enterprise level features. When paired with Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Foundation edition, customers get an affordable solution for up to 10 users. If the customers’ needs require up 25 users and a desire for integrated management of local or cloud based Exchange or Office 365 as well as client PC backup, Windows Server 2012 Essentials edition is the ideal pairing. When paired with Windows Server 2012 Standard edition, the ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 is also a great solution for remote offices. This pairing offers improved experience for branch office users, local Active Directory for faster logins, file replications, and simplified remote network management.

About the Author

The specification from retailers seems to be 2gb of memory. In real world use people should be able to specify more memory.

Personally I think that even the 16gb memory is a bit small, particularly if you want to run a virtual environment.

So lets see 8gb memory as standard and options up to 64gb memory.

Thank you for your input, Stephen.

The MicroServer Gen8 is designed as the ideal first server for customers with basic business needs. Options offered are based on the workloads an SMB that starts experiencing with servers would run and on its typical budget. However, we acknowledge there are users that could benefit from more compute power while preserving the form factor that makes the MicroServer so attractive. We will definitely share your comments with the engineering team.
