Ideal Pairings of HP ProLiant Gen8 Servers and Windows Server 2012 Datacenter

With 4 different editions of Windows Server 2012 available, and numerous HP ProLiant Gen8 servers, it can be difficult to choose the perfect pairing. Each edition of Windows Server 2012, from Foundation to Datacenter, has specific server requirements, and works best with various HP ProLiant Gen8 servers. Today, we want to discuss Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, and the 3  HP ProLiant Gen8 servers that we feel pair best with this edition of Windows Server 2012: the HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8, the HP ProLiant DL560 Gen8, and the HP ProLiant BL660c Gen8 servers.

First, let’s take a minute to learn a bit about Windows Server 2012 Datacenter so you will understand why we think these 3 servers are the best match. Datacenter, ideal for highly virtualized private cloud and hybrid cloud environments, allows for unlimited virtual instances and unlimited users with CALs. Providing you full Windows Server functionality with unlimited virtual instances, Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, uses a “processor + CALs licensing model”. This licensing has been simplified from previous versions to ease your purchase and management needs. It is important to remember that Datacenter edition and Standard edition differentiate by virtualization rights only (with two virtual instances for Standard vs. Datacenter’s unlimited virtual instances). So remember, if you have a highly virtualized environment, Datacenter is the edition for you!

Now that you know a bit about Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, let’s learn about the three servers that we recommend pairing with it. We recommend 2 platforms from HP’s Rack (DL) family, the DL380p Gen8 server and the DL560 Gen8 server.

The HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 server sets the standard for next generation 2U 2-socket rack servers; giving you the perfect solution for the dynamic compute requirements of today’s demanding data centers. This server has improvements in serviceability, unmatched performance, enhanced configuration flexibility, and customer-inspired design. The HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 family has 24 DIMM slots, 6 I/O Expansion slots, and offers users choices from the Intel Xeon E5-2600 product family.

The second server we recommend from the HP Rack (DL) family is the HP ProLiant DL560 Gen8 server. This server is a
new server in the ProLiant portfolio and redefines density-optimized 4-socket rack server technology without compromising on performance, scalability, and expandability. The DL560 has an ideal 2U dense form factor with 48 DIMM slots capable of a maximum memory of 1.5 TB and has up to six PCI1 expansion slots, as well as the Smart Array P420i storage controller.

Both the DL380p Gen8 and the DL560 Gen8 both support HP iLO Management Engine, which includes HP iLO, HP Intelligent Provisioning, HP Agentless Management, HP Active Health System, and HP embedded Remote Support, supporting Windows Server 2012 Datacenter.

The third HP ProLiant Gen8 server I recommend pairing with Windows Server 2012 Datacenter is from the HP BladeSystem (BL) family. The HP ProLiant BL660c Gen8 server is ideal for virtualization, database, business processing, and general 4P data-intensive applications where fine-tuning of data center space and price/performance is paramount. The BL660c redefines density-optimized blade technology. Hardware enhancements of the BL660c Gen8 server include the HP SmartDrives, Smart Socket guide, SmartMemory, FlexibleLOM technology, “3D Sea of Sensors”, the embedded Smart Array P220i RAID controller and more. This server also offers many software enhancements including HP Integrated Lifecycle Automation, Dynamic Workload Acceleration, Automated Energy Optimization, Intelligent Provisioning, agentless hardware monitoring, and Active Health System to name just a few.

We hope this blog has helped you choose the best HP ProLiant Gen8 server + Windows Server 2012 Datacenter pairing to meet your specific server needs.
