Latest Version of SAS Smart Array Controllers: P430, P431 and P731m

Storage plays a critical role when it comes to datacenters and the cloud. With the increase in new applications, expectations for storage and its response become a key concern. Microsoft Windows Server 2012offers a wide variety of storage features and capabilities to address these storage challenges.

 

HP’s latest version of SAS Smart Array controllers unleash the full performance potential with ProLiant Gen8 systems when deploying high-performance solid-state storage eliminating bottlenecks. In addition, these controllers address new levels of data protection, improved resiliency, and performance, when compared to the previous generation controllers.

 

The new HP Smart Array P430 and P431 controllers provide enterprise class storage performance for all HP ProLiant Gen8 rack and tower servers. To support internal server storage, the P430 card has internal ports while the P431 card provides capacity expansion by connectiong to HP JBODs.

 

For the Gen8 blades HP has introduced the HP Smart Array P731m controller. Both the P731m and the SAS switch play an integral role in deploying shared storage or direct attached storage using HP JBODs. With shared storage environments, more than one blade server can access a storage logical unit. This is ideal for virtualized environments where VMs can be transitioned from one server to another. In Direct Attached Storage (DAS), customers can zone a group of drive bays from the JBODs and assign them to the desired blades. The P731m offers load balancing and fail over capability when using dual paths to dual-ported SAS drives.

 

 

 

 

If you are not yet convinced that these new Smart Array controllers can benefit you or your customers, here are a few more facts that might help convince you:

 

-          With the introduction of the new Smart Array controllers, HP introduces a larger and faster cache module that boosts write performance in various RAID operations up to 20%.

-          HP has optimized their firmware to provide higher performance RAID operations, reads, writes, and rebuilds

-          These controllers provide investment protection by supporting the current and future JBODs and drives from HP

-          In HP’s effort to simplify and consolidate storage management, they have developed a new management tool called HP Smart Storage Administrator (HP SSA)

 

In addition, some of the advanced features that were part of the Smart Array Advanced Pack are now part of the base features for these controllers. The base feature set will include predictive spare activation, HP SDD Smart Path, Advanced Data Protection via RAID 6/60, Dual domain, RAID 10 ADM and more.

 

Optional HP Smart Cache is also available for these controllers—Smart Cache is a controller based caching solution in a DAS environment that caches the most frequently accessed data onto lower latency SSDs to turbo-charge application workloads and optimizes performance with modest storage investment. With these Smart Array controllers, HP now offers controller-based Secure Encryption, which allows customers to protect their sensitive data.
