Matchmaker Monday- Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials + HP ProLiant Gen9

Your SMB customers need to be able to focus on their core business, not on managing their Information Technology (IT). The technology they use needs to help their business to become more productive, deliver easy access to applications from anywhere or on any device, protect critical data, and provide an easy path to cloud integration. A server solution from Microsoft and HP can do all that and more! Today we will look at Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials edition and 3 HP ProLiant Gen9 servers that we think pair best with it.

**NOTE: If WS2012 R2 Foundation edition is a better fit for your SMB customers, please check out our first Matchmaker Monday blog, “Matchmaker Monday: WS2012 R2 Foundation + ProLiant Gen9”.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, the latest version of Windows Small Business Server Essentials, offers users a flexible, affordable, easy-to-use server solution for SMBs with up to 25 users and 50 devices. This edition of WS2012 R2 is designed to help SMBs operate at the same technology level as much larger organizations, without the added costs and complexities of managing a complicated IT infrastructure. Essentials edition also provides a high degree of flexibility and choice that enables small businesses to leverage a combination of cloud-based or traditional on-premises applications and services. There are three primary capability areas of WS2012 R2 Essentials that meet many of the most pressing needs of your SMB customers: 1) helping protect their data, 2) providing secure remote access, and 3) integrating cloud services.

There are many different servers available that your SMB customers could pair with Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, but we would like to highlight three that we think are an ideal pairing: the HP ProLiant DL120 Gen9, DL160 Gen9, and ML110 Gen9.

From our previous matchmaker blog, you may recall the HP ProLiant DL120 Gen9 Server was one of our suggestions for pairing with the Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation edition. No, we have not made a mistake; this server is indeed an ideal pairing for both editions! It is not only a good solution for SMBs just starting out and running Foundation, but also a great solution for businesses with growing needs running Essentials. With an enterprise class design, the DL120 Gen9 offers users a dense 1U/1-socket form factor, along with a stellar combination of performance, redundancy, and expandability. This server supports one Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v3 processor.

If your SMB customers need a server that supports two processors, the HP ProLiant DL160 Gen9 Server is a great option with support for Intel® Xeon® E5-2626 v3 processor. Additionally it supports optional FlexibleLOM, 92% 900W power supply, and Energy Star supported SKUs. SMBs can get what they need with the DL160 Gen9—a fully integrated platform designed to perform and scale. Offering standard HP Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) capabilities for simplified IT infrastructure management, 16 slots for DDR4 memory, eight drives, and two standard NIC ports, ProLiant DL160 Gen9 Server offers the ideal set of features for meeting SMBs’ everyday business needs.

Finally, for your SMB customers looking for a tower server to pair with WS2012 R2 Essentials, the HP ProLiant ML110 Gen9 Server is just what they need. The HP ProLiant ML110 Gen9 Server has a single processor and is a 4.5U tower, including up to five PCIe slots with room to grow with up to eight Large Form Factor (LRR) or sixteen Small Form Factor (SFF) disk drives. Also providing eight DDR4 DIMM slots supporting HP DDR4 SmartMemory with a maximum capacity of 256GB, making this the ideal server for small- to mid-sized businesses and remote offices/branch offices.
