Matchmaker Monday: Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard + HP ProLiant Gen9

Windows Server 2012 R2 captures Microsoft’s experience of delivering global-scale cloud services to provide an enterprise-class server and cloud platform. WS2012 R2 comes in four editions allowing users to pick the best edition to suit their needs: Foundation, Essentials, Standard, and Datacenter.

Today’s blog will focus on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard edition and three HP ProLiant Gen9 servers we think are an ideal pairing. **If you are looking for information on pairing HP ProLiant Gen9 servers with other editions of Windows Server 2012 R2, please see our previous Matchmaker Monday blogs, which cover Foundation and Essentials editions (and be on the lookout for the next blog covering the Datacenter edition).

Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard edition is ideal for physical computing or lightly virtualized environments and offers users the full Windows Server functionality with 2 virtual instances. With Windows Server 2012 R2, the Standard and Datacenter editions’ features are identical and both are licensed the same, per processor plus CALs. The difference between these 2 editions is based on virtualization; Standard edition with a 2 CPU offering has a limit of 2 VMs per license while Datacenter edition with a 2 CPU offering has unlimited VMs.

Combining the virtualization and scalability features of Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard with the intelligence of HP ProLiant Gen9—the world’s most self-sufficient servers—means your customers win. Now, let’s look at the three Gen9 servers we recommend pairing with Standard edition: the DL60 Gen9, DL180 Gen9, and ML350 Gen9.

The HP ProLiant DL60 Gen9 server is an affordable choice for SMBs needing minimum compute resources. The DL60 provides the right density, performance, and manageability for file and print, messaging, collaboration workloads, and cloud environments all in a compact 1U chassis. In addition, this server offers support for up to 4 LFF drive options and 2 Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v3 processors for maximum I/O throughput. Standard with 2x1 GbE, up to 3 PCIe slots, and choice of HP Flexible LOM provides your customers with flexibility of networking bandwidth and fabric so they can adapt and grow to changing business needs.

For your SMB customers who require additional memory, storage, and I/O, we recommend pairing Standard edition with the HP ProLiant DL180 Gen9 server. This optimized 2U server can keep pace with SMB data growth, while providing options to manage and deliver performance. This server also supports up to two Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v3 processors, with up to 12 cores and 16 DIMM slots of HP DDR4 Smart Memory, offering users improved performance and efficiency. All of this put together in a new compact chassis makes the DL180 Gen9 an ideal platform for SMBs and Enterprises running Cloud and mobility applications, which need the right, mix of compute and storage.

The HP ProLiant ML350 Gen9 server is the final server we will look at today. It is an ideal choice for customers whose growth is expanding rapidly, as it gives users ample amounts of storage, processing, and memory capacities. Offering standard HP Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) capabilities for simplified IT infrastructure management, 24 slots for DDR4 HP SmartMemory with up to 14 percent greater performance (a maximum of 48 drives), and an embedded 4x 1GbE NIC, the HP ProLiant ML350 Gen9 server offers the ideal set of features for growing business needs today and tomorrow.
