Microsoft AMD Pilot Program offers more economical licensing for Windows Server 2019 on HPE ProLiant

GettyImages-1010593510.jpgHPE, AMD, and Microsoft are partnering to deliver some of the most economical and energy efficient single- and dual-socket HPE ProLiant servers with significant savings on HPE OEM Windows Server® 2019 licensing.

From now until 30 June 2021, businesses choosing 48- and/or 64-core AMD® EPYC™ 7002 series processors with HPE ProLiant Gen10 and Gen10 Plus servers can qualify for savings of up to 50% on HPE OEM Windows Server 2019 Standard and Datacenter licensing. In addition to the licensing savings, these businesses will benefit from the power and energy-efficiency of a high core count AMD processor.

There are several use cases that are ideal candidates for Microsoft AMD Pilot Program licensing. These include:

  • Organizations with existing Hyper-V® virtualized environments
  • Organizations with a majority of virtualized workloads running on Windows Server® virtual machines (VMs)
  • Organizations with remote office / branch office (ROBO) locations or Internet of Things (IoT) deployments

Eligible HPE ProLiant servers include the HPE ProLiant DL325 Gen10 and Gen10 Plus and the HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 and Gen10 Plus. Note that licensing requirements are capped at 32 cores per processor, but all cores can be utilized. It’s also important to note that the Microsoft AMD Pilot Program is only available with a new HPE ProLiant server purchase. Also, the licensing can’t be transferred to another server after the purchase.

Windows Server® licensing requirements include Windows Server 2019 Standard or Windows Server 2019 Datacenter "base licenses” to cover the first 16 cores plus AMD Windows Server 2019 Standard or AMD Windows Server 2019 Datacenter 16-core “additional licenses” as needed to cover a minimum of 32 cores per processor. This works out to one AMD additional license for HPE ProLiant DL325 Servers and three for the HPE ProLiant DL385. Note that the additional licenses need to carry AMD Pilot Program expanded license terms documentation for proof of licensing.
