Windows Server 2012 R2 provides enterprise-class datacenter and hybrid cloud solutions that are simple to deploy, cost-effective, application focused, and user-centric. With the recent release of Windows Server 2012 R2, Microsoft has made a few changes to pricing and licensing that affect all channels. Let’s take a look at some of these changes.

With each release of Windows Server, Microsoft gives their customers new and improved functionality in categories such as storage, networking, mobility, and cloud services. With all the improvements, Windows Server Datacenter has had the same price in OEM for almost 10 years.

Windows Server 2012 R2’s Datacenter edition has a 28% price uplift and gives users higher VM densities and a lower price per virtual instance of Windows Server.

The increase of virtual capacity in Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter comes from many different features working together. R2 Datacenter’s high scale performance enhancements include support for:

-          320 logical processors on hardware

-          4TB physical memory

-          64 Virtual processors per VM

-          1TB memory per VM

-          1,024 active VMs per host

The Datacenter edition of Windows Server 2012 R2 also gives users the ability to grow or shrink VHDXs with no downtime, live migration, live migration compression, and live migration with RDMA, as well as Hyper-V Replica enhancements including tertiary site support and sync intervals as low as 30 seconds.

In addition to these enhancements to Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, Microsoft has also made changes to Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services (RDS) CALs. With Windows Server 2012 R2 there is a 20% price uplift for RDS CALs and many key product and licensing enhancements.

There were many key enhancements made to Windows Server 2012 such as simplified deployment and management integrated across session host VMs. Customers also have access to Remote FX WAN support, flexible storage alternatives, GPU support for both physical and software GPUs, User Profile Disk, Fair Share, and a seamless user experience with multi-touch support.

With Windows Server 2012 R2, users also get many new features like Storage Tiering, Online VHD de-duplication, improved RemoteApp experience, the ability to dynamically add/remove monitors, and quick reconnect. It is important to note there are no new R2 RDS CALs. Instead, Windows Server 2012 RDS CALs provide entitlement to Windows Server 2012 R2 functionality.
