My grandmother was right about Windows Server 2003

by Greg Chabot

Yes. I know she passed away a few years ago at the age of 99+, so she wouldn’t have had a clue about Windows Server 2003 End of Support. But mémère’s (that’s a French Canadian term for grandmother and what we called her) grasp of the fleeting nature of time is perfectly suited to this situation. On U.S. Memorial Day, she would declare: “Ah, well, another Memorial Day. Pretty soon it will be the 4th of July and then Labor Day and the summer will be over.” On Labor Day, she would adapt it to: “Ah, well, another Labor Day. Before you know it, it will be Thanksgiving and then Christmas and then the year will be over.”

Companies who still haven’t begun the Windows Server 2003 Migration process would do well to heed mémère’s words … and attend the HP Discover Barcelona session titled Modernize your Windows environment now: Best practices for migrating from Windows 2003. Time is running out quickly to complete the migration. Before you know it, it will be July 14, 2015 – the end of support date - and your chance will be over. You’ll need that time between now and then to implement a complete migration for three very good reasons:

  1. A coherent, seamless migration FROM Windows Server 2003 is not an overnight process
  2. Migrating TO a new operating system opens up exciting opportunities to align the business with the New Style of IT.  For example, Windows Server 2012 R2 makes it possible to leverage virtualization, cloud, big data/analytics, mobility and other technologies that Windows Server 2003 could not support. However, it’s important that all of the elements of the new environment be carefully chosen and implemented if organizations are to get the most from their new capabilities. Again, that can’t be done overnight.
  3. What mémère said

If you haven’t yet launched your migration program, this Discover session is a great place to start. You’ll learn about the risks of not migrating, as well as about the HP Windows Server 2003 Migration Program that has proven to help reduce the complexity, cost, and risk associated with migrating applications and infrastructure. The session is being held on Tuesday, December 2 at 10:00 a.m. in Room A04, Hall 8.0.

Go ahead. Add it to your session scheduler now. You’ll be ahead of the game. And you’ll make my mémère proud.

Complete information about HP Discover Barcelona 2014 is available on the event site. Check out the session catalog for other sessions on HP – Microsoft solutions by entering the word “Microsoft” in the “Find content” search field.
