No Monkey Business: The Houston Zoo gets an Extreme IT Makeover!

Xani

The Houston Zoo provides housing, meals, medical care, and education for over 6,000 permanent residents. In addition to caring for all their animals, the Houston Zoo also has over 2 million guests a year come to experience the incredible variety of animals and ecosystems, as well as attend special private and public events and entertainment. To accomplish all of this, the zoo’s dedicated staff works around the clock to ensure that the zoo is always running smoothly for the safety and well-being of their residents and guests.

At the Houston Zoo, the primary focus is to care for the animals. Caring for so many different animals, all with unique needs, requires a robust IT infrastructure with many different applications behind the scenes. With improved technology, the staff at the Houston Zoo can work better, faster, harder, and smarter.

In this edition of the Extreme IT Makeover, HP, Microsoft, Intel, and Aldridge Managed IT Services made sure the Houston Zoo had the IT they needed to best fulfill their mission. The zoo received HP ProLiant DL180 Gen9 servers featuring Intel Xeon E5 processors to help manage and operate a new mobility solution, software, and many applications throughout the Houston Zoo.

Before the makeover, the staff had no kind of mobile solution. This meant that important data collected in the field was recorded by hand, or on multiple devices, with no way for the staff to share and collaborate. To help resolve these issues, Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 was installed, allowing the zoo to integrate across their entire system. To further power and drive the mobile solution they so desperately needed, HP Tablets put collaboration power right in the hands of the staff. These tablets will be able to survive real world durability, drops, water, or anything else that might come about from working with animals, allowing the staff to record, and share valuable data, as well as get important information right when they need it.

The Houston Zoo has always worked hard to care for their animals and get them the care they needed when they needed it. This new IT infrastructure simply allows them to better do so. The ability to be mobile and have instant access anytime and anywhere, increases the efficiency of the staff and helps them stay on track so they can provide the very best care to the animals.
