ProLiant ML110 Gen9 + Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation = affordable, secure, reliable SMB solution

As a small and midsize business reseller, you probably hear lots of different concerns and questions from your SMB customers, and we bet you have heard all of these a time or two (or more):

“Our resources are very limited; we need to implement a solution that fits our needs today within our budget”

“We need technology that drives productivity so we can focus on growing the business”

“We need peace of mind that our company data is securely backed up”

Although these concerns all address different topics, we have a server solution that can help SMBs address all of these issues (and more). So, what is this magical solution? It is the combination of the HP ProLiant ML110 Gen9 Server and Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation edition.

In this session of Coffee Coaching, Tom McCarthy, HP Server Product Manager, tells you all about this server solution that is ideal for your SMB customers.

Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation is an economical, general purpose server operating system for physical computing environments only, providing customers with a Windows Server experience for up to 15 users. Licensing for foundation is a server model with no Client Access License (CAL) requirements. Foundation is a full featured 64-bit version of Windows Server, which enables core IT resources such as file and print sharing, remote access, and security. In addition, it provides a network foundation from which users can centrally manage settings on their computers that are based on the Windows operating system, and upon which they can run the most popular business applications.

As an entry level product, there are a few key points we want to make sure your customers are aware of:

  • It is a 1 processor unit
  • There is no Virtualization
  • No CALs required
  • Purchase of licensing is available through HP

No server solution is complete without the server! While there are many servers that will work with Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation, for this particular SMB server solution we suggest running Foundation on the HP ProLiant ML110 Gen9 server (the Gen9 replacement for the ML310e Gen8 v2). The ML110 Gen9 Server is powered by one Intel® Xeon® E5-2600 v3 Series processor (remember, Foundation is a 1 processor unit) and delivers exceptional performance, expansion, and growth options at an affordable price.

For connectivity, this server has 8 USB ports, supports 2x1 Gb Ethernet ports, 1 iLO dedicated port for remote access, and 1 internal MicroSD and 1 video port. In addition, the ML110 Gen9 has up to 5 PCI Express 3.0 slots. The I/o updates mean enhanced processor throughput and the connectivity options provide simple pathways to a multitude of options for expansion and flexibility to meet growing business demands.

Before we go, let’s take a quick look at the three customer concerns and how this server solution addresses them. For affordability, Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation edition is the lowest cost offering in the Windows Server family, and the ML110 Gen9 is one of the newest entry towers at an affordable price. For security, using Foundation edition provides customers with greater peace of mind to enable to core portfolio of IT resources with the following benefits:

  • provides reliable technology to run popular business applications
  • enables sharing of resources such as file and print
  • allows for remote access and security features
  • increases employee productivity and helps secure day-to-day data exchange without requiring email or the Internet.

Finally, to help SMB customers focus on what’s important — running the business — this solution gives them IT that is simple and reliable.
