READ ME FIRST…Windows Server 2012 Essentials

From Microsoft case study

Gazprom is a global energy company, with major business lines in geological exploration, production, transportation, storage, processing and sales of gas, gas condensate and oil, as well as generation and marketing of heat and electric power. The company is among Russia’s fiver largest oil producers and its largest owner of power generating assets in the country. Headquartered in Moscow, Gazprom has dozens of subsidiaries around the world.

Investgazavtomatika is an associated enterprise that provides IT services to many Gazprom subsidiaries.

Gazprom gave Investgazavtomatika the tasks of consolidating the sprawling Gazprom IT infrastructure, reducing IT costs, improving IT staff efficiency, accelerating server delivery, and improving disaster recovery.

When Microsoft introduced Windows Server 2012, Investgazavtomatika quickly realized that it would be a key technology to help them centralize IT and build a true private cloud; something Investgazavtomatika was unable to do before due to the limited availability of technology limited time to commit to new IT, due to routine infrastructure maintenance work.

Their solution included Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft System Center 2012, HP ProLiant BL460c G7 blade servers, and HP c3000 BladeSystem enclosures.

They created Hyper-V servers in three locations—two in Moscow and one in Israel—to provide geographically dispersed highly available services. A wide area network using the cross-premises connectivity feature of Windows Server 2012 connected all three sites.  Each site used an HP BladeSystem c3000 blade enclosure, with eight HP ProLiant BL460c G7 blade servers

Dmitri Starostov, head of the IT department at Investgazavtomatika, explained that standardizing on HP servers was an easy decision because price point is very important to Investgazavtomatika, and HP hardware is “priced aggressively”.

Investgazavtomatika also liked the reliability level and the quality of support that HP hardware provides, “Once, one of our data centers flooded, and not a single HP server was damaged. The servers shut down, but after they dried out, they worked fine!” explained Starostov.

By upgrading to Windows Server 2012 run on HP ProLiant BL460c G7 servers, Gazprom can create a private cloud environment that will help the company reduce capital and operating costs, increase business agility, and improve disaster preparedness.
