Send in the specialists: Backup & recovery solutions for HPE ProLiant for Microsoft Azure Stack
By Bageshri Kundu
Data management and protection - no matter where your data lives - is a real concern. So, when we wanted to make sure that the best in backup and recovery was available for our HPE ProLiant for Microsoft Azure Stack solution, we worked with the specialists – Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) like Veritas, Commvault, and Micro Focus – to deliver robust, validated packages to enhance our integrated solution.
If you’re a sports fan, you definitely recognize names like Adam Vinatieri, David Ortiz, and Dennis Eckersley. They were outstanding specialists – place kickers, designated hitters, closers, etc. – brought in at a certain time to provide their unique skills to win games, and often world championships. Because HPE is strongly committed to partnering with ISVs and developing a robust ecosystem for our products, we turn to proven winners to provide winning assistance when and where it is needed.
Defining our customers’ need
In the cloud era, we found that a growing number of companies were looking for local data back-up to ensure complete data sovereignty and data privacy, which is one of the key value pillars for HPE ProLiant for Microsoft Azure Stack – the ability to run Azure-consistent services in your data center, without sending any of your data to Azure public.
While the integrated Azure Stack back-up solution allows for backup to Microsoft Azure public, it makes no provision for the local backup many customers are asking for.
As we worked with customers to define requirements, it became clear that choice mattered – you asked for us to work with best-in-class ISVs to develop our backup solution. We also made sure that the new backup and recovery solutions could easily integrate with tools/technologies that you are already running in your data center.
Creating superior solutions
The process of partnering with our ISV specialists yielded three winning data protection and backup solutions that are available NOW for HPE ProLiant for Microsoft Azure Stack:
Commvault Software provides comprehensive data protection and management that runs fully native within Azure Stack and is multi-node ready including including: backup and recovery of Azure Stack VMs and Azure Stack blob storage, migration of a VM from an external hypervisor to Azure Stack, and disaster recovery of your Azure Stack VMs. This means no matter where your data lives or where you want to move it – Azure, Azure Stack, or somewhere else – Commvault has you covered with a complete solution that lowers costs, provides one set of tools for your team to manage, and indexes the data so you know what you have and where it is. And native integration with Azure Stack means Commvault provides agentless backup and recovery of your Azure Stack VMs and agentless granular recovery of files and folders to simplify data protection. See the whitepaper for additional information.
Micro Focus Data Protector is an enterprise-class backup and disaster recovery solution that protects data and applications across multiple platforms including Microsoft Azure Stack. Using advanced integrations, Data Protector enables backup lifecycle management, single item recovery, and disaster recovery for all Azure Stack workloads - standalone and clustered systems as well as multi-node availability groups. Integrated HPE StoreOnce Catalyst provides source-side deduplication, which enables efficient data transfer from Azure Stack to HPE StoreOnce appliance. The data can be replicated to another StoreOnce device or sent to Azure Cloud. Data Protector’s flexible, scale-out architecture accelerates backup of Azure workloads and solves bandwidth and load issues. Native application integrations provide application consistency, data integrity and recoverability for the most critical business applications, including Microsoft SQL and Oracle. Advanced analytics provides effective SLA management for Azure Stack workloads. More information is available here. More information is available here.
Veritas NetBackup enables complete protection and delivery of stringent SLAs for Azure Stack and Azure public cloud environments. NetBackup integrates with HPE StoreOnce to enable efficient movement of de-duplicated data from Azure Stack VMs to HPE StoreOnce systems. For optional backup to the public cloud, HPE Cloud Bank Storage protects more than100 PB1 of data at 20x2 lower cost than existing public cloud services. Customers also enjoy cloud-aware, fast and reliable protection of data in Azure Stack environments while moving other data to Azure public cloud. NetBackup delivers a single, unified solution that eliminates the complexity of point solutions for physical and virtual infrastructure management. See the Reference Architecture for complete details and visit the Veritas team for a demo at booth #1113 at Microsoft Inspire.
