Texas Children’s Hospital to deliver very special keynote on digital transformation

Add this to the many great reasons for you to attend the Houston, TX session of the HPE – Microsoft Hybrid Cloud Roadshow on February 4:  John Hamm, VP, Information Technology at Texas Children’s Hospital, and Teresa Tonthat, the healthcare 1 - January 2020.jpgHospital’s AVP, Information Technology / CISO will be featured in a “Fireside Chat” keynote that discusses how the Hospital was able to ignite innovation and achieve a very successful digital transformation with HPE and Microsoft Hybrid Cloud. Jeff Carlat, HPE Sr. Director of Global Strategic Alliances will host the session.

The discussion will focus on the Hospital’s goals for transformation, the major steps that have been taken so far, a look at the current environment and a glimpse at plans for the future. It’s an excellent opportunity for attendees to hear first-hand from a real-world enterprise about the challenges and rewards of digital transformation and the impact it has had on the patient and user communities they serve.

Contributing to a mission of caring

Texas Children's Hospital, located in Houston, is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to create a healthier future for children and women throughout their global community by leading in patient care, education and research. It is consistently ranked among the top children’s hospitals in the nation.

Like all organizations, the hospital has seen a massive increase in the amount of data available to its physicians and researchers. In fact, it currently has approximately 40,000 devices producing data. The challenge is to provide quick, reliable access to exactly the data the user communities need for patient care and research. This simply couldn’t be done with a standard approach that locks up information in different databases. HPE has partnered with Texas Children’s in creating a better approach via digital transformation.

Ensuring data access to all who need it

The transformation began three years ago with a process that would ensure the right foundation. Working closely with HPE, the hospital:

  • Consolidated 10 datacenters into 2 connected to Microsoft Azure cloud
  • Standardized on HPE Synergy and HPE 3PAR
  • Began the transformation to a completely software-defined infrastructure
  • Provided focused training, shifting IT engineers into software-defined environment experts

The initiative has been an impressive success. For example, building a workload used to require at least 6 weeks. Recently, the hospital was able to build 200 workloads in 5 minutes using automation. IT has also created a catalog that allows them to spin up services much more quickly.

The next step is now to find ways of unlocking data in order to better explore it and put it in the hands of those who can make the best use of it. This will dramatically enhance the hospital’s ability to achieve its goals.

The benefits of a true partnership

Texas Children’s Hospital was aware that its transformation goals could not be achieved in a standard customer-vendor relationship. They wanted a true partnership that would encourage contacts with all relevant parts of their organization – finance, operations, legal, etc. – in addition to IT. They were also looking for an organization that would commit itself to hpe-microsoft-hybrid-cloud-summit-2020.jpgcooperatively work on a holistic solution and complete transformation, rather than simply point solutions.
