Virtualization with Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Windows Server 2016

Your SMB customers are looking for technology solutions that will help them reduce costs, secure their data, and improve their IT efficiency to reach their goals. Set them up with a server solution that combines the ease of management, virtualization, and scalability of Windows Server with the intelligence of HPE ProLiant Gen10 servers to help transform their businesses and unleash new business value.

Small to midsize businesses face the same business challenges as larger enterprise businesses, but they usually must address them with less resources. Simply put, your SMB customers must make the most of everything and do what it takes to save time and money. If they have not virtualized their IT infrastructure, they may be leaving both on the table. Virtualization will allow them to allocate resources to applications as needed so they can run multiple applications on a single server, helping them do more with less while still managing the increasing number of workloads they rely on to run their business.

HPE Small Business Solutions for Virtualization can further help them maximize performance and efficiently scale computing capacity while optimizing their investments in their hardware, software, and maintenance. These solutions are building block recipes designed and tested on HPE ProLiant servers that are optimized and validated to run Windows Server 2016.

When it comes to virtualization needs for SMBs, we typically see three key customer scenarios: the new to virtualization customer, the aging hardware customer, and the overwhelmed virtualization customer. Let’s take a look at each of these customer scenarios and the virtualization solutions recommended for them.

  • The New to Virtualization Customer is a customer that is not yet using virtualization. For customers who are managing multiple servers and desktops, virtualization can provide cost savings, save resources, deliver flexibility, and eliminate downtime. HPE has tested virtualized solutions for Windows Server 2016 Standard with Microsoft Hyper-V for this new to virtualization customer. This type of customer typically need 2 or 4 Virtual Machines (VMs). Windows Server 2016 Standard includes rights for two Virtual Machines and alternatively allows for 2 Hyper-V containers when all of the cores of the server are licensed (for every 2 additional VMs, all cores must be licenses again). When it comes to 2 VMs HPE has tested the HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen10 for a tower server option and the HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen10 for a rack solution. For 4 VMs, look to the HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen10 tower or for a rack server the HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10. And, HPE has recently added a single socket AMD EPYC rack server, the HPE ProLiant DL325 Gen10 server that is a great option.
  • The Aging Hardware Customer is one that is currently using virtualization but has older servers. Virtualization can increase latency issues when not enough resources (compute, memory, or bandwidth) are available. These customers typically need to consolidate their old VMs and need to be able to add more VMs. They will often start with needs in the 6 to 8 VM range and possibly need more. For customers whose businesses require HPE Small Business Solutions for Virtualization addressing 6 to 8 VMs, you should consider the HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 for a tower configuration, or for a rack configuration the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10, or the HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10. For customers with needs in the 6 to 8 VM range, Windows Server 2016 Standard is a great choice! If your customer will exceed 12 VMs, they should consider Windows Server 2016 Datacenter instead to minimize licensing costs.
  • The Overwhelmed Virtualization Customer is one that is using virtualization but has concerns about VM sprawl and licensing costs. VM sprawl can be a real concern, as licensing unused VMs can be very expensive. Tools can be used to audit low-utilization VMs so customers can understand their true needs. HPE Small Business Solutions for Virtualization can help them choose the right next generation solution on HPE ProLiant Gen10. For customers who want to put all of their VMs on a single server, the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen10 Server can help. Our recipe tests this virtualization mega-workhorse for up to 16 VMs. Windows Server 2016 Datacenter is a great option here as it provide unlimited virtual instances.

So you see, no matter what virtualization needs your customers currently face, there are HPE Small Business Solutions for Virtualization that can help them achieve their most important business outcomes. Learn more at
