What the End of Mainstream Support for WS2008 & WS2008 R2 means for you?


You have probably heard that Microsoft Mainstream Support for Microsoft® Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 ended January 13, 2015. And yes, this applies to Windows Server OEM Products sold by HP as well.


What does this mean? This means that Microsoft is ending support for these products as part of their Support Lifecycle policy, found in and Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are now in the Extended Support Phase of the Microsoft Support Lifecycle.

What does this mean for HP Reseller Partners and customers? It is time for customers to prepare and execute their upgrade and/or sustained engineering plans for these Windows Server versions. Keeping their Windows Server version up to date ensures their software benefits from the many enhancements, fixes, and security updates provides through the latest releases. HP will continue to support the ProLiant server hardware running Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 on specific servers which are certified for those operating system versions (see for more information). With HP Care Packs, HP Support for Microsoft Server Products is as follows: full support is provided for products currently in the Mainstream phase of support, best effort support is provided for products in the Extended Support phase. Additional support, purchased directly from Microsoft, may be needed in the Extended Phase lifecycle to have access to all patches, hot-fixes and service packs.


Will HP continue to offer OEM part numbers of Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2?

No, HP currently offers OEM part numbers for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 only. These ship with ProLiant servers, either pre-installed or Non-preinstalled (also referred to as “drop-in-box” licenses).

HP customers who purchase these Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2 products have the option to downgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2 through November 30th, 2016.
