Re: hard disk configuration on the compaq es45
This configuration is known to work (all official Compaq products):
- AlphaServer es45 Model 2B
- dual channel SCSI controller, PN 3X-KZPEA-DB = Adaptec AIC-7899G, on board PN is 30-56150-03, has two external 68-pin VHDCI connectors, two internal 68 pin HD connectors and one internal 50 pin connector
- Disk drive cage BA610-6D, can hold up to six 1-inch drives, on cage PN is 30-50802-01
- 36.4GB 10K rpm Wide U320 disk drive, PN 3R-A3838-AA, on disk PNs are 300955-014 and 3R-A4027-AA
- 68 wire internal SCSI cable having three internal 68 pin HD connectors
This is OK on the console and it works well with OpenVMS.
The console shows (remarks added):

pke0.7.0.102.1 PKE0 SCSI Bus ID 7 -> Channel 2 of second Adaptec card
The internal SCSI cable has three connections:
- First connector (at one side) to the internal connector of the Adaptec card,
- second connector (in the middle of the cable) to a small board,
- third connector (at the other side) to the storage shelf.
The "small board" is located on top of the server and is not easily accessible. All internal shelf storage cables are connected to this board in the middle of the cables. "Compaq daughter card" is indicated on it. This board seems to be the "Compaq SCSI Environmental card for BA610-6D/6E", PN 3R-A1629-AA or 010615-001, which is mandatory if you want to use the shelf.

Re: hard disk configuration on the compaq es45
Sorry for my slow follow up. I have now acquired the said scsi controller as you use, and attached as you instructed. The only difference as far as I can see is that I do not have the same scsi cable,( I have many more connector points on all mine. Nevertheless they have been functioning flawlessly on several servers and desktop machine for quite some time)
When executing show config and show device I still do not get entries from the 4 disks. But I have now gotten a new entry that did not show up in last scsi card configuration : jka. I also now notice 2 scsi entries, pka and pkb. I only had pka with the newer scsi controller..
here is the full print out..

Could scsi cable termination be an issue here, even though these cables I have tried functions perfectly when sitting in older Dell servers, and my home built desktops with 80 pin emulator backboards on 80pins hot swap disks ? perhaps alphaservers are more demanding here for example ?
