Performance Policies for Hyper-V 2012 R2

We're creating volumes for each of our server vm's in our Hyper-V cluster. Because they are Windows servers, I'm inclined to select server-specific performance policies (e.g. 'Windows File Server', etc.).  However, because these volumes are hosted by the cluster, each volume will also be a 'Hyper-V CSV'.

So my question then is, which performance policy will be most appropriate for a Windows server living on a CSV?

Any insight is appreciated.

Re: Performance policies for Hyper-V 2012 R2

Hello,

For Hyper-v anything with 4k blocks size will suffice, performance policies are all very similar, it is simply their name that changes in many instances, having specifically labeled performance polices helps with identification of volumes and improves reporting in Infosight. As such create a hyper-v performance policy with 4k block size, cache and compression enabled and assign this to volumes.

Also recommend creating a hyper-v-NON-cached performance policy with caching disabled, to be used for log, backup and scratch volumes.

Thanks,

Chris

you will use the Hyper-V policy for all volumes that the host owns, and use the specific application policy (file, SQL, Exchange, etc...) when the volume is directly mapped internally to the VHD OS.
