Snapshots and Hyper-v Cluster VSS Writer

Nimble now has synchronization for Exchange and SQL using Microsoft VSS writer to do volume collection snapshots. Will there be one for Hyper-V VSS writer? or it's not needed just snapshoting the volumes without using the VSS writer is fine?

Hi Jason,

There are plans for Nimble to release VSS Synchronised snapshots for Hyper-V using the VSS writer. If you'd like to understand a more detailed roadmap timeframe for this please ask your local Systems Engineer.

Today we fully support snapshotting Hyper-V volumes with no VSS Synchronisation. This will mean that snapshots will be more crash-consistent than application or VSS consistent. Therefore today's Best Practice Guide for Hyper-V recommends to place application data volumes in separate guest-initiated volumes to the Virtual Machine rather than placing them inside a CSV volume if application consistency is required.

Just to add to this, we would also like HyperV VSS support, it's something that would certainly be useful and important bearing in mind the growing market share of Hyper V (although I appreciate it's not as much as VMWare!)

Hi, just curious if there was any more development on a Hyper-V cluster VSS writer? We do crash consistent snaps on our volumes not but would certainly like things to be app consistent. Thanks!

Good news - Hyper-V Consistent Snapshot functionality is slated to be part of the upcoming NimbleOS 4 release .
