A new way to manage your storage infrastructure: HP 3PAR StoreServ Management Console

Ivan.jpegBy Ivan Iannaccone, HP 3PAR StoreServ Product Management @IvanIannaccone

This year has been pretty amazing! HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3 and HP 3PAR OS 3.2.1 have brought you a lot a new features plus increased resiliency. However there was something missing…a new way to manage your storage infrastructure. Missing no more! With the introduction of our next-gen management console: HP 3PAR StoreServ Management Console, also known as SSMC. Better yet, it’s free of charge for all our HP 3PAR StoreServ customers.

What is SSMC?
HP 3PAR StoreServ Management Console (SSMC) is the replacement for the current HP 3PAR Management Console, also known as IMC and the external instance of System Reporter. It offers converged management of both file and block for the entire HP 3PAR StoreServ product line, all with a modern look and feel consistent with what HP OneView offers.

SSMC is also another important milestone in HP 3PAR Autonomic Technologies that aim to simplify the overall administrative tasks of a storage system. In this 3PAR Thursday overview of the SSMC Dashboard, you’ll see how it offers a clean, intuitive view of the entire HP 3PAR infrastructure status by monitoring three main key performance indicators (KPIs):

  • Systems physical and logical health
  • Systems performance health
  • Systems capacity allocation status

User-center design that's aimed for simplicity and user efficiency.

SSMC is built on the latest technologies (HTML5 and RESTful interface with JSON payload) and based on the same paradigms and design standard used by HP OneView. The toolkit’s user-centered design process translates a common set of best practice and design flows UI widgets. Using Hicks law as an example, how efficiently can the user reach the desired task/outcome given the current interface options? We want you to use the interface and be able to make sensible choices based on the information that we present.

Most companies are looking to “wow” with their interfaces, when in reality what you are really looking for is an “of course” reaction. These same companies also measure the GUI efficiency by merely looking at numbers of clicks. What we are doing with this new approach is offering you a complete new way to manage your entire IT infrastructure in the most possible intuitive way—and, when possible, without having you click anything.

Why scramble between menus and option? Search!
Located just to the right of the HP 3PAR StoreServ header are the Search capabilities that offer a global search of all objects attached to SSMC. In the example below, the user has a server attached to the array identified as only WIN. When WIN is entered in the global search, four objects that are associated to the name WIN appear in the search area. You can click on any one of the hyperlinks and proceed directly to the named object. This reduces the time wasted on scrolling through numerous pages of text information as you try to identify the relevant object.

What is cool is that you can also use the search capabilities as a pseudo-command line to quickly launch menus. This example shows what is offered when “create” is typed:

What about performance monitoring?

Maybe you figured this out by reading some of my previous blogs...but I am a bit of a storage performance junkie! So I’ve focused a lot on how to simplify and enhance how system performance data can be consumed. All performance and capacity reports are based on simple templates with options for advanced users to tweak them. Below is an example of the Exported Volumes template. The default setting presents a bird’s-eye view of a week’s worth of hourly collected data. From the same report, you can zoom-in and the sample will automatically adapt and change from daily to hi-res sampling. At any point in time, you can click at the interface to present at-time reports with in depth details of a single virtual LUN performance.

SSMC relies on the data collected by the instance of System Reporter that is installed and configured by default and runs directly on the nodes of every HP 3PAR StoreServ. The System Reporter view in the SSMC Systems panel provides information around sampling data retention.

One management console to rule them all.

SSMC offers the same management experience and interface from high-end to midrange and all-flash. So you can not only have the same One Storage Architecture experience but also a complete One Management Experience—with truly converged file and block management, powerful and unique global search capabilities and integrated System Reporter capabilities. There are other very interesting features in SSMC like map views, snapshots management and notifications. I would love to have covered them in more detail but this blog would be far too long. Instead, I invite you to take a look at the SSMC white paper to find out more! I also strongly recommend reading the Taneja Group analysis of file management on HP 3PAR StoreServ versus EMC solution. It really shows how more effective and efficient built-in architecture features are when compared to bolt-on solutions. Last but not least, it’s also important to remember the role SSMC plays within HP overall converged management strategy as you ready for the New Style of IT. My colleague Lee covered this in his Converged Infrastructure blog post last week.

How to get hold of SSMC?

HP 3PAR StoreServ Management Console 2.0 will be posted on HP 3PAR SW Depot by the end of January 2015 for all HP 3PAR StoreServ customers to be able to install free of charge.
