All-Flash Storage Arrays: Are You Ready for DIY Installation?

Blog by Alberto Tempia Bonda, 3PAR Product Manager, HPE Storage

Six months ago we launched the HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8000 Storage family. The adoption of these new models has been accelerating – and I’m not surprised about that because I know the unique 3PAR StoreServ architecture is truly solving customer problems, as discussed in this Taneja Group field report. And as we’ve blogged about before, we’ve been recognized by both Gartner and IDC as a Leader in All-Flash Arrays. With these and other endorsements, I’m excited to see where this 3PAR StoreServ platform can take you.

All this and easy installation too

Today I’m talking about the easy installation of this 8000 platform. It’s so easy that you can choose to do-it-yourself. In the home improvement business, they call this DIY_shutterstock_382594492_blog.jpgDIY. In the IT business, we call this CSI (Customer Self-Installation). It’s important to note that CSI is an option, not mandatory, so if you want to DIY, you can go for it with 3PAR StoreServ 8000. Now here come the details.

What does CSI mean exactly?

CSI means that if you’re an HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8000 customer, you may have the option of self-installing the storage system. It doesn’t mean that every customer has this option, and let me explain why. First of all, installing a storage system requires a specific technical profile. The installer needs to understand Storage Area Networks fundamentals and to have a good understanding of server virtualization and networking. If you meet this profile, CSI is an option you might consider. If you don’t feel comfortable with the self-installation process, you can rely on HPE deployment services and let HPE personnel or an HPE Partner do the installation for you.

Let’s assume now that you have the right technical profile and knowledge. The next step is to check if your storage configuration is eligible for CSI. Today, the CSI option is available for HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8000 2-node systems, regardless of the model (8200, 8400, 8440 or 8450). For example if you purchase a 3PAR StoreServ 8450 you have the option to do CSI as long as it is a 2-node system. There are two additional criteria for CSI eligibility: the configuration must fit in a single rack and should not have more than four additional drive enclosures. Let me summarize all the CSI criteria: 2-node configuration, one rack, maximum of four additional drive enclosures.

Now that you meet the technical profile and you know that your configuration is CSI eligible, what’s next? It’s very simple, just tell your HPE sales representative or HPE Channel Partner that you want to self-install your system. And you’re good to go. Wait, do you think you need some guidance?

How to install a 3PAR system successfully

We want to make sure that your installation is an overwhelming success which is why you need to meet the technical profile and should follow the guidelines described in HPE documentation. There are three avenues for supporting documentation that you must leverage to install a system successfully.

  1. Before installing the system, you should thoroughly review the HPE 3PAR StoreServ 8000 Storage Self-Install Guide. The guide walks through all the installation steps in detail: planning the installation, setting up and initializing the system, and completing the post-installation tasks.
  2. The self-install guide is complemented by this installation video that shows how to perform each step of the process.
  3. If during any phase of the installation process you have questions, you can refer to this forum where 3PAR StoreServ experts are available to help with the self-install process.

What if Customer Self-Install is not the right option for you?

Do you think that you don’t have the right knowledge to perform CSI or just not interested in a DIY project? Or maybe your system doesn’t meet the CSI criteria? You don’t have to worry, we’ve got you covered. If CSI is not an option for you, you can leverage HPE deployment services or let a partner you trust install your 3PAR system.
