What happens when you host your virtual server environment on an all-flash array? You can increase your VM density per server, so that you can quickly spin up new applications on mobile devices. After all, an all-flash array is a strategic investment when you want to be an agile IT services provider. But which all-flash array do you choose? HP 3PAR StoreServ all-flash arrays offer many benefits—including the resiliency and manageability required for critical enterprise application storage.


What happens when you deploy an all-flash array on both your server and storage environments?


  • Impact on servers: Initially, virtualizing Microsoft applications with Hyper-V focused mainly on controlling your physical server sprawl. Multicore servers bring plenty of processing power but it’s limited by disk storage performance. With an all-flash array, disk is eliminated as an I/O bottleneck—and server-based CPUs spend less time waiting for data and more time doing actual work.
  • Impact on storage: Virtualized server environments exemplify a random I/O workload that may lead to inconsistent, unpredictable performance. Traditionally, you address this problem by increasing the number of spinning media devices in a storage array to increase the aggregated number of I/Os that the array can handle. An all-flash array not only delivers predictable performance in Hyper-V environments, but also delivers at least a 10x increase in performance—so that you can consolidate the data center storage footprint.

What 3PAR StoreServ All-Flash brings to your Microsoft applications

HP 3PAR StoreServ All-Flash delivers unique features that can be used to great advantage within a Hyper-V environment that supports both critical and secondary Microsoft applications. You can count on:

  • Application multi-tenancy and isolation to avoid storage resource contention and application performance impact with Priority Optimization. There is no need to manually isolate high priority workloads to assure QoS. Mission-critical VMs have guaranteed access to storage resources for a designated level of service in a multi-tenant storage environment that also includes fewer critical Microsoft applications.
  • Efficient utilization of flash storage to support application growth with Zero Block Write Detection, Adaptive Sparing and Thin Deduplication. Zero Block Write Detection reduces writes to SSDs when not required. The Adaptive Sparing feature uses some of the reserved space on SSDs, effectively increasing the capacity of each installed SSD. HP 3PAR Thin Deduplication enables simultaneous ultra-fast inline deduplication and high performance demanded by flash-based media without contention and performance sacrifice.
  • Data protection for virtualized Microsoft application servers with HP StoreOnce Recovery Manager Central (RMC) with integration of 3PAR all-flash arrays with HP StoreOnce backup systems. This allows for direct or flat backup of Windows application data to a data protection system using writable snapshots to enable multiple recover points.
  • Application availability under a range of business continuance and disaster recovery scenarios with Peer Persistence (Figure 1), Persistent Ports, Persistent Cache, Asynchronous Streaming Remote Replication (currently available on HP 3PAR StoreServ 20000) and integration with Microsoft Azure Site Recovery (ASR).
  • Simplified storage system management with integration with Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM). HP 3PAR StoreServ SMI-S provider allows SC-VMM to discover, provision, configure, and automate storage management for all 3PAR StoreServ arrays.
  • Non-disruptive data migration with storage system support for migration of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 servers to later Windows versions with HP 3PAR Peer Motion. Data moves easily from the old to the new OS environments and automates the migration steps from the HP 3PAR Management Console.

Why you can’t beat 3PAR All-Flash for Hyper-V environments

All the 3PAR All-Flash features have brought down the price point to levels where you’ll find it advantageous to use flash in place of HDDs for virtualized applications.
