Customers speak about software-defined storage

I was searching around the internet tonight and bumped into a few videos that I want share with you from VMworld.  Software-defined storage was a big theme.  And despite the skeptics, it's gaining traction.

The first video is an interview that Dave Vellante did with Eric Hulber and Brady Wilson from HP StoreVirtual customer Opus Interactive.  This was a really interesting discussion where Eric and Brady talked about their business providing IT as a Service and Infrastructure as a Service (as a private cloud).  I love something that Brady says here, "It (software-defined storage) comes across as a buzzword initially but like cloud its the way things are going.  It makes sense".   Dave also asked Brady about their transition from the appliance-based StoreVirtual to StoreVirtual VSA.  Brady's one-word answer was priceless - "effortless".

I met Brady last year at VMworld 2012 - he was a guest on the Speaking in Tech podcast that was recorded during our Customer Appreciation Party.

Another customer that talked about their environment and their use of HP StoreVirtual at VMworld was FedEx - another really interesting discussion. Chris Greer is Director of IT and talked with Dave Vellante and Stu Miniman from  Chris talked about going from 0 to 22,000 virtual machines in 3 years as well as the challenges they faced.

From a storage perspective, Chris talked about how they originally used HP StoreVirtual VSA as a "sandbox" for their IT staff to test and play with before spinning up hardware based StoreVirtual.  He also talked about FedEx now using StoreVirtual VSA in smaller locations and the advantages he sees from the common software between the StoreVirtual VSA and the hardware appliance.

Since I'm on the topic of software-defined storage, I wanted to point you to a couple more videos with my cohorts from HP Storage talking to Dave.  First is a video with my former boss (he's now my boss' boss) Craig Nunes answering the question who leads: servers, storage, or networking, why now for software-defined storage, and much more.  Good interview and Craig does a great job giving our perspective.

The other HP conversation they had at VMworld was with Dale Degen.  Dale came to HP from LeftHand Networks and is now Sr Manager for our Product Management team.  Dale dives into the history of the development of the StoreVirtual technology including orchestration with OpenStack.

While these videos are from VMworld which is now about a month ago, they're still timely and very informative so check them all out!

Great examples of SDS use by Hosting companies and Enterprise businesses...a sign of things to come! Many enterprise companies are behaving more and more like service providers of IT to their organizations. Have you ever walked into a data center or colo of a company like Amazon or Twitter? You'd quickly notice that there are few 'tier-one, name brand' technology company products represented. Traditional tech companies have large franchises to protect, be wary of their SDS strategies, become an educated consumer and beware of vendor captivity.
