Day 1 HP Discover – the New Style of IT in action for HP Storage

MSE.jpgBy Melissa Elicker, Social Media Editor, HP Storage

Dateline Las Vegas. OK, I know it’s an old-fashioned, possibly uncool way to start off but I just felt the need. Seriously, as HP Discover 2014 kicked off in Las Vegas this week, there has been a hint of nostalgia in the air as HP celebrates its 75th anniversary. But the focus quickly turns to the future – and the commitment to solve customer’s pressing challenges today while addressing tomorrow's challenges with  the New Style of IT. (Paraphrasing what Meg Whitman said in her opening remarks in the Tuesday afternoon general session.)  But turning my attention to storage, that same theme played through the keynote and sessions I attended today. Here are some of the highlights.

David Scott Tuesday keynote – so popular he’s doing it again on Wednesday

Talking to a standing-room only crowd, HP Storage SVP and GM David Scott delivered on the premise of the keynote title: Say “yes” to change! Why customers are moving to HP Storage. He talked about bringing simplicity to the land of storage with a seamless transition to the future, with a recap of Monday’s big storage announcements.

Keynote.JPGJoining him on the stage were three customers: John Dubrava, Senior Manager, Storage Engineering, United Airlines; Jim Medeiros, VP of Information Services, Shared Services, UPS; and Eric Hulbert, Co-Found and CEO, Opus Interactive, Inc. They shared their innovation stories that included chapters on how products like HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage and HP StoreOnce with Data Protector are helping them move ahead.

If you missed it today, you can catch the encore presentation of David’s keynote TK4190: Say "yes" to change! Why customers are moving to HP Storage.  This session will run Wednesday, June 11th at 12:00 in Bellini 2002. To add it to your schedule, please log on to the Session Scheduler.

On to a software-defined storage session

In the bright lights of a Discover Theater session, Dale Degen, SDS Category Manager, framed his SDS.JPGpresentation around the five things you need to know about software-defined storage (SDS):

  1. What is Software-Defined Storage?
  2. What are the benefits?
  3. What feature should you evaluate in an SDS solution?
  4. Who is using SDS?
  5. What can HP do for you?

Some key takeaways: It’s not only a New Style of IT but a New Style of IT Economics, moving away from traditional IT. Converged storage was born software-defined – efficient, flexible and ready for the demands of your virtual environment, be that environment SMB, enterprise or cloud services.

Continuing the discussion on solid-state storage

Vish Mulchand, Senior Director Product Management, HP, led this session that asked the question: Is solid-state storage a new architecture? Or a new media type? Vish first outlined the benefits of using flash in storage infrastructure:

  • Increased revenue
  • Quicker decisions
  • Lower licensing costs
  • Lower footprint cost
  • Lower power and cooling cost

Customer Tim Horoho, Senior VP, Global Infrastructure and Support, ExactTarget, joined Vish on stage and 3PAR.JPGtook the discussion even deeper, delving in to storage requirements and tiered storage, SSD drives, asynchronous replication, and adaptive optimization. Judging from the healthy Q&A, the topic resonated with attendees.

My favorite takeaway was this flash cheer…as in F is for….

F = fast

L = low cost

A = autonomic

S = scalable

H = highly available

Taking a moment for insights of a different nature

And veering off the storage path, I also attended an Innovation Theater session about HP Earth Insights – healing the planet through Big Data innovation. This was all about how HP technology is working with scientists to create an early-warning system for endangered species. It’s using the New Style of IT to our planet’s benefit.

That’s a wrap for today. More tomorrow from HP Discover with an HP Storage view.
