Oracle databases are at the heart of enterprise environments, demanding the highest levels of performance and mission-critical availability. These capabilities are all offered in the HPE Reference Architecture – Oracle RAC Stretched Cluster with HPE 3PAR StoreServ 20800 and Peer Persistence.

What is an Oracle Stretched Cluster?

Oracle RAC implementations are primarily designed as HA solutions within a data center.  An Oracle RAC Extended Distance, or stretched cluster, takes this a step further allowing separation of clusters at much greater distances. These stretched clusters, provide extremely fast recovery from a site failure, allowing for all nodes, in all sites, to actively process transactions as part of a single database cluster.  For a robust end to end solution, the stretched cluster must be supported with transparent failover at the storage layer, such as 3PAR Peer Persistence.

What is 3PAR Peer Persistence?

HPE 3PAR Peer Persistence software enables HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage systems located within a metropolitan distance to act as peers to each other to deliver a high-availability and transparent failover. 3PAR Peer Persistence allows an array-level, high-availability solution between two sites or data centers, such as an Oracle Stretched Cluster, where failover and failback remains completely transparent to the hosts and applications running on those hosts. Unlike traditional disaster recovery models where the hosts (and applications) must be restarted upon failover, Peer Persistence allows hosts to remain online serving their business applications, even when the serving of the I/O workload migrates transparently from the primary array to the secondary array, resulting in zero downtime.

Peer Persistence software is built on the same industry-leading mesh-active and massively parallel architecture that HPE 3PAR is known for. HPE Remote Copy is a component of 3PAR Peer Persistence. HPE 3PAR customers with Remote Copy software can deploy Peer Persistence software without any appliance or additional required hardware.

Why 3PAR 20800 for Oracle?

HPE 3PAR StoreServ 20000 Storage is a new class of enterprise flash storage arrays with greater than 3M IOPS, sub-millisecond latencies, a 7x density advantage, and scalability to 15 PiB of usable capacity for massive consolidation. To demonstrate this capability, the HPE team set up an Oracle Stretched Cluster with 3PAR Peer Persistence. Key solution components include:

  • Oracle 12c with RAC
  • Four HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen8 servers running RHEL 6.6
  • Two HPE 3PAR 20800 Storage systems with Peer Persistence and Remote Copy
  • One HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen8 with win2012 R2 (Quorum server)

The stretched RAC cluster with HPE 3PAR Peer Persistence offers protection from site disasters and expands storage load balancing to the multi-site data center level. The ability to span metropolitan distances allows administrators to move storage workloads seamlessly between sites, adapting to changing demand while continuing to meet service-level requirements. HPE Remote Copy’s synchronous replication between arrays offers storage disaster tolerance. Peer Persistence adds the ability to redirect host IO from the primary storage system to the secondary storage system transparently.
