HP StoreOnce: Improved Leader position in Gartner 2015 MQ Deduplication Backup Target Appliances

AD.jpgBy Andrew Dickerson, Senior Marketing Manager, Backup, Recovery, and Archive Solutions, HP Storage

It’s more than magic, because we know data backup doesn’t exist in a vacuum.

“By 2018, 50% of applications with high change rates will be backed up directly to deduplication target Magic_MQ_ATSB_shutterstock_318520799_7October.jpgappliances, bypassing traditional backup software, up from 25% today.”

For a second consecutive year, HP is positioned as a Leader in Gartner’s 2015 Magic Quadrant for Deduplication Backup Appliances* for our StoreOnce solution. Evaluated alongside nine other deduplication backup target vendors, HP shares the 2015 Leaders’ quadrant with one other vendor. HP has this year improved its position, placed further along the ability to execute axis.

HP StoreOnce is gaining ground from 2014 to 2015 and here’s our take on why

According to the Gartner report, Leaders have the highest combined measures of Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision. On the execution side, Leaders' products have demonstrated innovation, reliability, broad platform support, scalability and ease of use. Leaders tend to have the market share, credibility, and marketing and sales capabilities needed to drive the acceptance of new technologies. They have a proven track record of financial performance on the product being evaluated and established strong market presence. On the vision side, they are perceived in the industry as thought leaders, and their products are used as benchmarks to compete against.

HP’s vision for backup is to eliminate complexity, reduce risk and lower costs. The vision is supported by a strategy that’s rooted in a 30-year storage track-record—combined with an understanding that data protection to support the new style of business often means multiple solutions BUT does not have to mean multiple vendors. We believe that’s why we’re gaining ground.

Eliminating complexity: converged backup for the new style of business

StoreOnce.jpgWe’ve listened to our customers’ needs and responded with multiple solutions that offer the right fit for a variety of environments. What makes HP different is that all of these solutions share the same underlying federated dedupe architecture, making converged storage a reality. HP StoreOnce federated deduplication with StoreOnce Catalyst delivers a simplified backup infrastructure that consolidates, automates and streamlines backup and recovery processes across the entire enterprise from edge to core.

Our latest innovation: HP StoreOnce Recovery Manager Central (RMC) and RMC-V for VMware combines the benefits of array-based snapshots on HP 3PAR StoreServ with the deduplication capabilities of HP StoreOnce Backup appliances or virtual solutions. The result is backup that’s fast and efficient by optimizing both data transfer across the network and the deduplicated storage of backup images on StoreOnce.

HP StoreOnce operates in an ecosystem of data protection applications from HP and other vendors. So, in addition to the wide support for StoreOnce by the majority of backup applications, we continue to expand our client-side deduplication integration to deliver advanced backup management and seamless data movement across the enterprise and have just announced StoreOnce Catalyst integration with Veeam. StoreOnce integrates with several core business applications including Oracle RMAN, SQL and SAP HANA to allow business owners more control over their applications and ensure their data can be protected rapidly while reducing costs and maximizing backup storage.

Reducing risk: solutions for the smallest remote office and high availability for the data center

HP StoreOnce is the ideal data center solution offering a virtual storage pool across multiple nodes with federated Catalyst for massive scale-out to 1.7PBs usable before deduplication or a massive 34PB of data assuming a 20:1 deduplication ratio. The StoreOnce 6500 also delivers high availability features including Autonomic Restart to ensure that backups keep performing even in the event of a controller failure; data isn’t left unprotected. Furthermore, the fastest backup and restore speeds in the industry reduce downtime and support advanced service-level agreements.

At the other end of the StoreOnce family, the StoreOnce VSA virtual backup application provides all the benefits of federated deduplicated storage with a low point of entry for automated, consolidated backup to eliminate the risk of data loss in the smallest of offices.

Lowering costs: storage efficiency and ability to keep pace with data growth

HP StoreOnce federated dedupe delivers storage efficiency from edge to core, reducing the cost of data replication and data management. All well and good you might say, but all our innovations continue to pass the “So what?” test through the HP Get Protected Guarantee Program that offers to reduce your storage capacity by 95%.

Backup doesn’t work in a vacuum. It exists as part of data lifecycle and a full spectrum of data protection solutions. HP continues to invest in a converged storage management strategy that unifies management regardless of technology or vendor. HP believes our position in the Magic Quadrant demonstrates that our unique converged backup approach is resonating with customers, supporting rapid market adoption and increasingly driving HP StoreOnce out in front.
