HPE 3PAR Online Import software has been around for quite some time, enabling data centers to migrate off their legacy EMC and HDS storage solutions on to HPE 3PAR StoreServ so that they can utilize the latest and greatest that HPE 3PAR StoreServ storage has to offer. Challenges abound, ranging from time and effort, application outages, complexities and risks. A typical migration process involves shutting down applications, backing up data, data migration, sync and verification. Many business and technical decisions need to be kept in mind as well.

With all these considerations, data migration from one storage array to another is a herculean task with all the effort gone for a toss if there is any failure along the way. You can’t take such chances with your production storage systems with mission critical data, right? What you need is an industry proven, time tested solution.

In addition to previously supported EMC and HDS source arrays for migration to HPE 3PAR StoreServ, starting with 3PAR Operating System version 3.2.2 MU2 we now also support IBM XIV as the source array for migration. Customers can now migrate from legacy IBM XIV Gen 2 and Gen 3 to HPE 3PAR StoreServ with the new HPE 3PAR Online Import for IBM XIV.

The HPE 3PAR Online Import for IBM XIV orchestrates the migration of block data from selected IBM XIV storage systems to HPE 3PAR StoreServ. HPE 3PAR Online Import for IBM XIV systems shares the framework of the HPE Online Import Utility for EMC and HDS that is used by many customers for data migration from legacy EMC and HDS arrays to HPE 3PAR StoreServ.

3PAR Online Import: the technology and benefits at work

HPE 3PAR Online Import is built on 3PAR Peer Motion technology, allowing for data migration from a non-3PAR StoreServ system to a destination 3PAR StoreServ system. When using 3PAR Online Import, you can migrate volumes and host configuration information to a destination 3PAR StoreServ system without changing host configurations or interrupting data access.

HPE 3PAR Online Import coordinates the movement of data from the source to the destination while servicing I/O requests from hosts. During data migration, host I/O service to the source storage system takes place through the destination 3PAR StoreServ. The host and volume presentation implemented on the source storage system is maintained on the destination 3PAR StoreServ Orchestration for data migration from a non-3PAR StoreServ system to a destination 3PAR StoreServ system is provided by HPE 3PAR Online Import software.

HPE 3PAR Online Import helps to minimize disruption. It’s just five easy steps—and your hosts and applications stay online during the data migration process. The 3PAR Online Import offers a command line interface with a small set of high-level commands by which the storage administrator selects the volumes to migrate and initiates the physical data transfer from the source to the destination storage system.

With the 3PAR Online Import, the data transfer is array-to-array without the use an external hardware appliance or host-based mirroring. Online Import is a ‘pull type’ migration where the destination 3PAR StoreServ array automatically requests the data from the source array. The data transfers over the peer links, the dedicated dual-path FC interconnect between the two arrays; the same concept that is used in HPE 3PAR Peer Motion and HPE 3PAR Online Import for EMC and HDS systems.

Now, with the addition of support for IBM XIV as the source array for migration to HPE 3PAR StoreServ, the complete support landscape of HPE 3PAR data migration solutions can be summarized as follows:

How does HPE 3PAR Online Import for IBM XIV Storage work?

HPE 3PAR Online Import software for IBM XIV supports various types of migration methods. Depending on the type of migration method you choose, the options are:

  • Non-disruptive migration method (online method)
  • Minimally disruptive (a short outage window is required)
  • Offline

HPE 3PAR Online Import adds support for the following IBM XIV arrays models*:

  • IBM XIV Gen 2
  • IBM XIV Gen 3

Concurrent migrations are possible in the following configurations, for migration from IBM XIV to HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage:

  • Concurrent migration of multiple hosts from the same source to the same destination array
  • Concurrent migration of multiple, mutually exclusive source-to-destination array pairs (N:N)
  • Concurrent migration of multiple source arrays to the same destination array (N:1)
  • Concurrent migration of hosts from the same source array to multiple destination arrays (1:N)

     First the pre-requisites

    There are no specific steps that need to be executed in the planning phase for IBM XIV Storage arrays. Native OS multipathing is assumed to be enabled on the hosts being migrated from the IBM XIV source array to the destination HPE 3PAR StoreServ.

    For IBM XIV arrays, the SMI-S provider is embedded in the administrator module of the arrays so there is no need to install any additional software. The provider is enabled and running by default in all administrative modules.

    5 easy steps: workflow for IBM XIV to 3PAR StoreServ

    The HPE 3PAR Online Import for IBM XIV enables you to migrate data off the IBM XIV to the HPE 3PAR StoreServ in just five easy steps:

    1. Add source array. This can be any of the above listed IBM XIV arrays.
    2. Add destination. This is a HPE 3PAR StoreServ system.
    3. Create migration. This orchestrate the migration (hosts, volumes) from source to destination.
    4. Start migration. This is where the actual data migration takes place. The most important point to note is that your data/host is online during the entirety of migration. Depending on the host OS*, you chose the type of migration method, either the online method or minimally disruptive method.
    5. Remove migration. This is the migration cleanup.

Is there any feature of 3PAR to dynamically migrate of Volume from one Raid set to another set while keeping the application online? Please attach reference docs for better understanding




@tanveer - 3PAR uses a concept call CPGs - these are basically pools of storage you create using certain drive types in RAID levels you can specify. To move data from one CPG to another you would use 3PAR Dynamic Optimization software.
