HPE 3PAR StoreServ All-Flash Storage Array: Get Thinner and Faster

New Year resolutions have a shelf life of perhaps a few weeks or months, cast aside and forgotten by the end of January. Not this year however, if you’re a storage professional. The flash storage drift

A growing mountain of evidence amply demonstrates the benefits of transitioning from a legacy storage architecture to all-flash arrays (AFA). Improved SLAs, higher OLTP transaction performance, faster time to data warehousing insights are just some of the improved business outcomes with AFAs. You might think that AFAs are like the shiny sports sedan you desired, but, based on their higher acquisition cost, forced you to settle for the traditional, enterprise class Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) pickup truck instead. These HDD workhorse arrays, while challenged on IOPS and latency performance, have reliably delivered high capacity storage at a competitive $/GB price point. The cost of transitioning existing high capacity HDD storage to an AFA was deemed prohibitive for anything other than specialized workloads.

This has left you with a conundrum – a desire to deploy AFAs at scale, but held back by the perceived lower costs of legacy HDD infrastructure.

An option to “Get Thinner”

Thin Technologies have been at the core of the 3PAR architecture since day 1 – starting with Thin Provisioning that back in 2010, we were so confident that HPE 3PAR Thin Provisioning would offer improved storage efficiencies over legacy storage that we guaranteed it.

Customers who are adopting flash today still have expectations – maybe even higher expectations – that they’ll get the best possible efficiency with their new flash storage purchase.  Enter the new HPE 3PAR Get Thinner Guarantee.  We are still so sure that customers who migrate from legacy storage to 3PAR StoreServ All-Flash will see significant capacity savings that we are still willing to guarantee it!

Backed up by HPE 3PAR Data Compaction technologies, including Thin Deduplication, with HPE 3PAR Get Thinner Guarantee, HPE offers 75% capacity reduction* when the written data stored on the legacy storage system is migrated to HPE 3PAR StoreServ AFA or HPE will provide up to 30 TiB of additional raw capacity along with related software and associated support.

How do we do it?

Behind this guarantee is a suite of HPE 3PAR Data Compaction Technologies that reduce flash capacity requirements, and the associated CAPEX investment by mitigating overprovisioning all while maintaining performance.  These HPE 3PAR software components include:

  • Thin Provisioning software which leverages the StoreServ platform’s silicon based fat-to-thin processing to rapidly and non-disruptively “thin” traditional volumes on your legacy storage.
  • Thin Deduplication software which is ASIC-assisted, takes place inline, increases capacity efficiency, protects system performance and extends flash media life span.
  • Thin Clone software, an extension of Thin Deduplication software for server virtualization environments, providing server host-initiated deduplication that produces non-duplicative (i.e. thin versions) Virtual Machine clones for Microsoft® Hyper-V and VMware ESXi.

Now that we are thinner, let’s get faster

A powerful HPE ProLiant Gen9 multi-core host server running virtualized workloads and connected to blazing fast AFA is a recipe for a potential storage I/O and networking bottleneck, compromising your investments in high-performance server and storage array infrastructure. Mixed application traffic will put different demands on the Fiber Channel HBA and switch – low latency for OLTP workloads, high IOPS for VDI as examples. Bare metal servers face similar I/O challenges when connected to an AFA.
