Re: HPE Cloud Bank Storage: A Data Protection Solution You Can Bank On

With HPE Cloud Bank Storage you can leverage low-cost external object storage (on-premises or in the cloud) for long-term retention of backup.

HPE CloudBank_blog.jpgData can create a lot of business valueโ€”but it also represents significant liability. As we speak, your organization is gathering data faster than ever from many different sources. Keeping pace with this unprecedented data growth poses a huge challenge. The bigger challenge lies in securing the data so that it can be effectively utilized without fear of unauthorized access or data loss.

Any breach in data security can severely damage the reputation and performance of your company. Client information, payment data, personal files, bank account details, etc. are some examples of data sets that can be hard to replace and potentially dangerous if it falls into the wrong hands. Data lost due to disasters such as a flood or fire is crushing, but losing it to hackers or a malware infection is catastrophic to any business.

The โ€œWannaCryโ€ virus unleashed one of the worst and most widespread cybersecurity attacks ever seen. The virus rapidly locked up files in more than 200,000 PCs in governments, hospitals and major companies across 150 countries while demanding money (in the form of bitcoins) in return for unlocking encrypted files.

Organizations infected by the virus have included Germany's rail network Deutsche Bahn (where hacked train and departure boards led to a temporary return to chalk and blackboards), Spanish telecommunications operator Telefonica, US logistics giant FedEx and Russia's interior ministry. One of the most seriously impacted victims of the ransomware attack was the National Health Service in the UK where some hospitals were forced to cancel outpatient appointments.

Follow the 3-2-1 data protection rule

One of the timeless data protection rules that can effectively mitigate a ransomware attack is called the 3-2-1 rule which prescribes that you should:

  1. Have at least three copies of your dataโ€”the primary data and two copiesโ€”to avoid losing data to a faulty backup.
  2. Store the copies on two different types of mediaโ€”such as tape, disk, secondary storage, or cloud.
  3. Keep one backup copy offsiteโ€”either on tape or in the cloudโ€”in the event of local hazards or ransomware infections within the network.

Cloud Bank Storage for hybrid cloud data protection

Cloud Bank Storage enables StoreOnce customers to leverage low-cost external object storage (on-premises or in the cloud) for long-term retention of backup.

Cloud Bank Storage benefits

Lower cost

  • Combines StoreOnce deduplication efficiency with object storage (cloud or on-premises) to drive down the cost of long term backup data retention.
  • RMC Express Restore support for Cloud Bank Storage* allows you to save on data egress charges typically charged by cloud service providers by moving less data out from the cloud tier for recovery.
  • Optimizes use of bandwidth when sending copies to cloud based storage.

Flexibility

  • Choice of multiple vendors (cloud and on-premises) object storage including AWS S3, Azure Blob storage (Hot and Cool Tiers) and others with no vendor lock-in
  • Broad-ecosystem of supported ISVs (CommVault, Veritas NBU, Backup Exec, Data Protector, BridgeHead Software), StoreOnce Catalyst Application plug-ins (Oracle RMAN, MSFT SQL and SAP HANA) and RMC

Simplicity

  • Single management point for copy control utilizing the existing backup application

Reduced risk

  • In case of a failure, users can restore Cloud Bank Storage to an alternate local or cloud-based (low cost, flexible) StoreOnce System to execute the disaster recovery.

Scalability

  • Cloud Bank Storage can store up to 2x the maximum configurable capacity of the StoreOnce System. In conjunction with the largest StoreOnce System, you can protect up to 68PB of data in the object storage platform (on premises or in the cloud) of your choice.

Is Cloud Bank Storage right for you?

Cloud Bank Storage is an ideal solution when you are looking for:

  • Benefits of cloud storage without changing your existing backup application environment
  • Low cost of cloud storage for long-term retention of backup data which has to be kept available for regulatory or business requirements
  • Protection of offsite backup data copies without investing in an owned off-site location
  • Cloud-based disaster recovery but without the high costs associated with the transfer of large amounts of data to the cloudCloud Bank backup.png

It is a great way to eliminate tape for long term retention. Is there any plans to support Veeam?

Diego - to support CloudBank, the backup ISV has to support Catalyst Copy.  That's something in the backup software has to implement. I've heard it's being looked at but that would be a question to ask Veeam.

Al Mendes

Is there a way to get notified once Cloudbank is officially released?  We need to buy it and want to move as fast as possible.

Hi Al,

I believe the target date is in the next couple of months but watch for a blog post later this week that should have more details.
