HPE SimpliVity VDI solution for Citrix Cloud enables remote workforce

Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) can have a significant impact on remote workforce productivity. New plugin connects HPE SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure clusters with Citrix Cloud in just a few clicks, allowing IT generalists to simply, efficiently, and cost-effectively manage their entire VDI infrastructure.

Businesses around the world are going through an immense change as they try to cope with the challenges posed by stay-at-home orders. Employees must readjust to a new way of working while keeping pace with the workload.

The many changes they have undergone include:

  • Adapting to changes in the way they access their applications and development tools within their new desktop environment
  • Discovering that they may have limited access to some applications, which causes loading and access delays
  • Adjusting to changes in personal data and shared repositories that must be reconfigured for their new home workspace.

Many of these new ways of working can have a significant impact on your employee productivity. To ensure a smooth transition, organizations need to find ways to present applications and data access with a similar look and feel, regardless of employee location and which device they use.

CIOs and IT administrators must also take virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) one step further. They are under pressure to find a solution that will not only improve productivity but also reduce cost. To accomplish this, they require an infrastructure that is not complex to manage and maintain. They also need a highly available environment that can provide instant recovery capabilities should any disaster happen. Many organizations have to meet compliance restrictions and protect against any legal fallout, as well.

For many businesses, traditional 3-tier architecture is not the best solution because it can be complicated to deploy and manage, and it can be expensive. Customers can be unsure about the return on their investment, and they have to plan early to size for optimum user experience. Managing these environments requires additional personnel costs, too, as infrastructure engineers need to spend time to keep the system in optimum configuration.

A virtual desktop infrastructure can be an ideal approach if IT organizations choose their solution carefully.

Here are key features to look for:

  • A consistent user experience regardless of where employees are working, and what device they are using
  • Validated, feature-rich VDI infrastructure, which provides superior performance
  • The flexibility to start small and scale up linearly, and to change the configuration, as many organizations are continually making changes to their applications
  • The intelligence to predict and advise organizations of any performance and compliance deficiencies
  • Easy upgrades to the latest versions – ideally with simple one-click upgrades.

Unless you have a fully trained, dedicated VDI specialist on staff, you should also look for a VDI solution that is easy to deploy and maintain by an IT generalist. In other words, you want to have a public cloud-like experience with a very minimum intervention to the infrastructure, and private cloud security, compliance, and performance capabilities.

A simple hyperconverged platform for VDI

HPE SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure is designed with simplicity in mind. The predictive HPE InfoSight artificial intelligence capability combined with SimpliVity has proven to reduce infrastructure management and maintenance costs significantly. This AI capability, combined with all-flash performance and always-on inline deduplication, makes this hyperconverged platform ideal for VDI workloads. HPE SimpliVity architecture is designed for linear scalability, where customers can start small and scale to their needs, too.

HPE SimpliVity has been validated by LoginVSI to provide superior performance with linear scale. The graph below shows that the average LoginVSI latency remains the same while the user desktops have increased linearly, with more SimpliVity nodes added to the cluster.

Many platforms have limited capabilities to expand the resource once the initial configuration is deployed. However, HPE SimpliVity has the most flexible option to expand resources. The latest software can add more SSD drives and automatically expand the storage capacity. You have the option to expand from x6 to x8 to x12 to x16 storage drives within the node, without having to rebuild the node or entire environment. Similarly, customers can add a compute node to SimpliVity clusters, starting with two-node clusters. For linear scalability of compute and storage expansion, you can simply add a hyperconverged node to the environment.

New HPE SimpliVity plug-in for Citrix Cloud

When it comes to providing a feature-rich virtual desktop experience, I believe Citrix offers by far the most advanced VDI solutions in the market. HPE and Citrix have a 20-year partnership that has evolved to facilitate solutions that combine the two companies’ infrastructure and software portfolios to provide customers with an optimal VDI environment. Many VDI customers are hesitant to deploy and manage VDI infrastructure in-house for data security reasons. With Citrix Cloud and HPE SimpliVity, customers can deploy and manage VDI infrastructure securely, and with lower maintenance, resulting in much faster ROI for their VDI environment.

Other customers are worried about deploying and managing VDI in-house because of the complexity and lack of onsite talent. In the Citrix Cloud and HPE SimpliVity solution, Citrix workspace appliance manages the VDI infrastructure while customers can keep their VDI desktop on premises. HPE SimpliVity has made it even more straightforward by developing a plugin to connect the HPE SimpliVity cluster with Citrix Cloud in just a few clicks. This enables an IT generalist to comfortably manage the entire VDI environment, helping to relieve the anxiety of CIOs and IT administrators.

With HPE SimpliVity and Citrix Cloud, customers get the best of both worlds for their virtual apps and desktops: the elasticity and simplicity of the public cloud and the security and performance of private cloud.
