HPE Storage Emerging a Leader
Enterprise data storage has been a wild ride over the past several years, and we’re seeing large shifts in both technology and business models. With dominating trends in cloud, mobility, big data, and social media, the IT department has become the cornerstone of success in harnessing these opportunities. Exciting times indeed!
I’ve been beating the HPE drum for over 5 years, explaining how bullish I am about what we’re doing in the storage market. I could see the writing on the wall when we set our vision around Converged Storage. And then bringing 3PAR into our portfolio was like throwing kerosene on the fire.
I’m encouraged and reinvigorated by the many analyst reports that substantiate why HPE Storage is leading in the space, so I’m writing this post to share those findings along with links to the full reports (complimentary) for easy one-stop-shopping. So let’s dig in!
Performance Benchmarks and Industry Rankings
There are more industry reports than anyone can keep up with – and some of them you can’t access unless you pay for them. Here are a few leading reports for you to check out and I’ve highlight where HPE Storage was ranked.
Primary Storage
- SPC-1 Performance Benchmark - HPE 3PAR just recently released the industry’s best price/performance in the SPC-1 benchmark (for external SAN arrays). SPC-1 is in my opinion one of the best benchmarks out there because it simulates a workload that is about as close to running a mixed virtualized workload as anything out there. There’s a blog post that gives great insight into the SPC-1 results and also has links to the details that you can check out.
- DCIG Storage Buyer’s Guide - DCIG has a long history of storage buyer’s guide and the latest 2015-2016 All-Flash Array Buyer’s Guide put HPE 3PAR All-Flash at the head of the class, literally named as best-in-class all-flash storage array. Personally, I think 3PAR should be on everyone’s all-flash short list.
- Gartner Magic Quadrants - Gartner has a Magic Quadrant for Solid-State Arrays. I take great satisfaction in our “leader’s quadrant” position, especially considering when we first announced 3PAR all-flash, many of the start-ups said that 3PAR StoreServ didn’t belong. They’ve given up that argument because 3PAR has clearly proven it belongs but it has me thinking how much do the upstarts really understand given they were so wrong about 3PAR.
- HPE is the only storage vendor named a leader in both the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Solid-State Arrays that I just mentioned and the Magic Quadrant for General-Purpose Disk Arrays with the same architecture, 3PAR. I love the blog post we have on this topic that compared this feat with American super-athlete Bo Jackson who excelled in both football and baseball.
- Gartner Critical Capabilities Report - The Gartner Critical Capabilities for General-Purpose, Midrange Storage Arrays report has HPE 3PAR StoreServ receiving highest scores for all six of the uses cases that Gartner defines. My colleague and rising superstar blogger Jorge Maestre has a great perspective on this report and 3PAR’s position in the industry.
Data Protection
- DCIG Buyer’s Guide – HPE StoreOnce was names best in class in the DCIG 2014-2015 Deduplicating Backup Appliance Buyer’s Guide.
- Gartner Magic Quadrant – StoreOnce was recognized as a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Deduplication Backup Target Appliances and is one of only two vendors in the leader’s quadrant.
Rubber, Meet Road
What does HPE’s leadership mean to anyone evaluating the many storage vendor solutions? Customers have noticed and it shows in results that are reported about the storage industry:
- HPE’s all-flash array revenue achieved the fastest growth rate in 2015, according to the latest IDC Worldwide Quarterly Enterprise Storage Systems Tracker 4Q15. And that growth has propelled 3PAR all-flash into the top tier of all-flash vendors.
- Chris Mellor of The Register wrote an article about the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Enterprise Storage Systems Tracker, March 11 2016. Chris titled the article “IDC storage tracker: The report's out. Vendors are losing it”. I love the subtitle he used – “Abacus-stroker says only HPE and 'others' are gaining share”. And we’ve gained share for 8 consecutive quarters! This graph from the report (with my colored arrows for emphasis) tells the story.
I hope you can see from just a sampling of what the industry is saying and the results we’ve seen why I’ve been so bullish on HPE Storage. I will leave you with a quote from a happy customer I met at Discover who recently replaced EMC with HPE:
“We switched to HPE storage after outgrowing the performance capabilities of our existing storage. We were blown away by the increase in performance and simplicity. Our only regret is that we didn't do it sooner."
-Trevor Jackson, Director, IT Infrastructure & Architecture, SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada)
