HPE Storage and Mesosphere: Meet the New Platform for Delivering Hybrid IT for Modern Enterprises

It’s no secret. Today’s enterprise data centers have become very complex. In addition to maintaining the infrastructure for traditional applications, IT is tasked with an unenviable job of delivering modern applications at the speed of business – without compromising reliability, added risk or cost.

While consumers and end users enjoy the benefits of non-stop application access, managing and maintaining an infrastructure to meet application needs at scale is an extremely difficult job.

In the digital economy, applications are the new currency. Enterprises rely heavily on IT to deliver new applications, unleash new business opportunities and be the disruptive force behind digital transformation.

To accelerate this transformation, HPE and Mesosphere are announcing a Global Reseller Agreement that will enable customers to take the next step toward hybrid IT.

HPE and Mesosphere: Paving the way for hybrid IT 

Mesosphere Logo.jpgEvery data center has myriad applications – both traditional and modern. Traditional applications, such as CRM, ERP, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server, have been the backbone of enterprises for many years – and will continue to serve you well into the future.

Businesses are now deploying modern applications, made of containerized microservices, distributed database systems, big data services – the list goes on. All of have very different infrastructure requirements, resiliency needs and varying deployment and delivery models.

IT organizations have two options for modern apps: use public cloud-based platform services and risk lock in, or roll out modern apps in house. 

To build in house, IT traditionally dedicates infrastructures to support each of these application workloads, resulting in many “snowflakes.” This in turn can make it difficult to share data and resources between different environments.

Ideally, you want different applications and workloads to share data center resources to optimize infrastructure usage and/or consolidate workloads on platforms.

Mesosphere DC/OS

Mesosphere DC/OS enables data center resource components to be treated as an elastic pool of resources that can be shared among applications. In addition, DC/OS provides an efficient resource scheduler to handle a long list of tasks: resource provisioning for compute, network and storage; scheduling application jobs; security controls; monitoring; and high availability failover for both containerized and non-containerized applications.

This automation enables your enterprise to handle application delivery and deployment with the same level of efficiency that you see in hyperscale public cloud environments. That’s a critical next step in the journey toward hybrid IT.

Containerized workloads and data persistence

While containers were initially adopted for stateless (cattle) applications, there’s a growing appetite in the industry to deploy stateful (pet) applications within containers. That requires data persistence.

So what does this mean?

Typically, when a container dies, all the applications and data associated are simply destroyed along with it. That is, the data lifecycle is dependent on the container lifecycle. However, if you’re running a stateful container application such as database, you need to persist data beyond lifecycle of container. And, if that container is restarted or rescheduled on a different node by the orchestrator, the data volume must be represented so application can continue to function.

To ensure a data volume is always presented to a containerized application, several things need to happen. First, DC/OS schedules a container to run on an agent host that has access to the provider (e.g., HPE 3PAR). Second, the DC/OS agent instantiates the data volume via the HPE Docker Volume plug-in. Third, DC/OS maps the the volume to the container. This process continues, as DC/OS handles the rescheduling, cleanup and remapping as needed. Any container format is supported: Docker and Mesos containerizer.

The HPE Docker Volume Plugin was announced in June 2016. The scheme above enables stateful container applications to persist data on HPE storage platforms – HPE 3PAR StoreServ flash storage and HPE StoreVirtual software-defined storage. The HPE Docker Volume Plugin (downloadable from github) automates storage management tasks and manages the state of storage volumes to ensure an application’s data is always available.

Together, Mesosphere DC/OS and HPE Docker Volume Plugin ensures persistent data is available on any compute node, and gives stateful containers the same data mobility as their stateless counterparts. Mesosphere DC/OS provides scheduling, while the HPE Docker Volume Plugin enables stateful applications to benefit from the advanced features of HPE storage. The result is stateful applications that have the same scale and data mobility of traditional containers.

Customers all around the world have been deploying HPE 3PAR StoreServ for complex workloads with unpredictable demands for performance and scaling. The combination of HPE 3PAR StoreServ with Mesosphere Enterprise DC/OS expands the platforms ability to deploy and orchestrate container applications, bringing the agility, scale and data mobility required in cloud-inspired data centers. How does this work?

Mesosphere DC/OS will dynamically provision HPE 3PAR StoreServ persistent storage and scale stateful containers based on Service-Level Agreements (SLAs) or other requirements. We made this possible by integrating DC/OS DVD Isolator with HPE Volume plugin for Docker containers. Mesosphere Enterprise DC/OS can now consume 3PAR (and StoreVirtual) volumes for stateful containers.

Containers by nature enable application portability and mobility. The abilitly of Mesosphere DC/OS to treat entire data center resources as one entity is key to optimizing resource utilization, container application performance and mobility. The integration of DC/OS with 3PAR allows persistent data volumes to follow containers bringing mobility benefits to stateful containers while delivering best storage performance and efficiency regardless of the node containers are running on.

4 key 3PAR features make it an ideal platform for hybrid workloads

  1. HPE 3PAR StoreServ has a unique architecture that allows the system to truly leverage flash storage capabilities as the system is built to be both massively parallel and efficient – which is a key requirement for massively scaling stateful containers.
  2. Greatly varying application IO patterns often create an IO blender effect on storage systems, creating stress on the array performance and affecting the application performance. 3PAR architecture with built-in ASIC enables superior handling of varying IO patterns and delivers highest level of performance for any workloads
  3. 3PAR Priority Optimization or Quality of Service (QoS) eliminates noisy neighbor challenges so you can prioritize the IO, bandwidth and latency goals for each application (traditional or containerized workload). This is an important ability for any business (Enterprises or Service Provider) to deliver ITaaS with SLA commitments.
  4. A high degree of automation within 3PAR such as storage federation enables workloads and data to seamlessly move across 3PAR systems to match application performance with cost. This again complements DC/OS ability to optimize efficient use of data center resources while bringing the storage platform benefits..
