Introducing HPE StoreEver LTO-7: the next leap forward for big data archives

SW.jpegBy Simon Watkins, WW Product Marketing Manager, Backup, Recovery & Archive (BURA), HPE Storage

We want to share the news about the major milestone we reached this week with the announcement of LTO-7 across our full
portfolio of HPE StoreEver tape media, tape drives and tape automation. LTO-7 is the seventh generation of the world's most successful tape drive and is HPE’s highest-capacity, fastest and most reliable tape drive yet. Let’s take a closer look at the technology, use cases and business value that LTO-7 delivers.

LTO-7 delivers breakthrough innovation in capacity, performance and reliability

  • More capacity – As your data grows, you can maintain or reduce your existing tape footprint with LTO-7’s greater storage capacity. The additional capacity offered by LTO-7 (now up to 15TB compressed) means that fewer tapes are required to store the same amount of data. This smaller tape count results in a reduction in both the number of library slots needed and the cost for offsite storage. This incredible density lets you maximize the amount of data that can be stored per square foot of expensive data center real estate.
  • Better performance – LTO-7’s enhanced data rate (now up to 300 MB/seconds native) provides a 1.8x performance increase compared to LTO-6. This performance boost translates into the need for less tape drives to do the same amount of work.
  • Higher reliability – LTO-7 also delivers higher reliability with a two orders of magnitude superior bit error rate compared to LTO-6 that is particularly important for Big Data archives. Put another way, you are now more likely to hit by lightning, get killed by a shark or win a multi-million dollar lottery than encounter an error on LTO-7 media that could not be fixed by ECC!

HPE StoreEver LTO-7 Family

We offer the broadest LTO-7 portfolio in the industry, serving every sector of the market from SMB through to midrange and on to enterprise customers. Our LTO-7 product set encompasses tape media to standalone tape drives through entry-level, midrange and enterprise-class tape libraries. And this broad portfolio gives you a wide choice of capacity and performance options, price points, form factor choices and levels of manageability and availability.

How is HPE StoreEver LTO-7 unique?

As my recent blog on tape storage innovation highlighted, HPE continues to lead in worldwide open systems tape drive, tape automation (1-100 slots) and tape media markets. Our market leadership represents sustained industry leadership, investment in innovation and deep tape storage expertise. It also positions us as a partner with a broader frame of reference and a wider regional and vertical market presence.

Another important differentiator for HPE StoreEver LTO-7 is product innovation. A great example is the HPE StoreEver MSL6480 mid-range tape library. The MSL6480 has disrupted the mid-range tape market with a powerful combination of unrivalled scalability, density and performance at a highly competitive price point.

Check out this video on the MSL6480 with LTO-7 detailing some of the many reasons driving rapid customer adoption and market share growth.

Other striking examples of HPE innovation in LTO-7 tape include HP StoreEver tape manageability software, the LTO roadmap, LTFS, FLAPE, tape as NAS active archive solutions, self-managing, self-healing tape archives, tested to extremes LTO tape media, KMIP-verified key management solution support and partner solution integration.

HPE StoreEver LTO-7 use cases

For backup and recovery LTO-7 tape can help optimize price/performance by moving data that does not require fast access on the lowest cost tape tier. For disaster recovery LTO-7 provides off-line data protection and the last line of defense versus virus attacks, natural disasters or data corruption.

But a key usage model for tape now and in future, enabled by Linear Tape File System solutions, is archiving –where LTO-7 tape continues to offer the lowest cost solution for long-term data retention and reliable retrieval.

HPE StoreEver Tape as NAS with LTO-7

80% of your data is rarely or never accessed within 90 days of creation. However, the business value of much of this data means it still has to be retained and readily available over extended periods of time.

Imagine the efficiencies and risk reduction you could achieve by moving this static data from your Tier-1 production environment to an active archive optimised for easy access, low cost and reliable long-term retention? Primary storage budgets go further, performance improves, compliance requirements are addressed and new analytical doors are opened.

HPE StoreEver Tape as NAS (tNAS) with LTO-7 creates an active archive by combining the performance and ease of use of NAS with the reliability and low cost of tape. It does this by presenting HPE StoreEver tape libraries as a standard network share or mount point using Windows or Linux file sharing protocols through a disk cache front end. Users can easily save, search and retrieve data directly from the StoreEver archive. Watch the HPE StoreEver Tape as NAS with LTO-7 video

The business value of HPE StoreEver LTO-7

Tape has made great technical strides over the last decade – from a performance, capacity, reliability and usability perspective. But while feeds and speeds are important, the executive boards of most organisations care more about how technology can lower costs, reduce risk and improve productivity in their organisation. And it is in this business context that LTO-7 tape will continue to be viewed as relevant and important.
