Looking for fast, affordable database protection? Look to Recovery Manager Central for SQL Server

By Parissa Mohamadi, BURA Solution Manager, HPE Storage Marketing

Worried about service levels every time you backup your SQL Server? Losing sleep over the cost and complexity of your database backup solution? Take a new approach with Recovery Manager Central for SQL Server databases.

Let’s face it: Backing up SQL Server databases with traditional methods is falling short of expectations. Although array-data protection_RCC_shutterstock_300150194_15Feb_Blog_sized.jpgbased snapshots offer fast, non-disruptive point-in-time copies of data, they alone can’t deliver comprehensive backup. You have to consider their retention limitations, corruption vulnerabilities, and dependence on the underlying storage system. To put it simply, if the storage system fails, your snapshots are at risk.

Here are a few problems that you may already be familiar with as a DBA:

  • You have no control over database protection because you rely on backup administrators to replicate the backup copies for offsite protection.
  • You have to deploy a backup application that not only adds cost but also introduces commands with which you’re totally unfamiliar.
  • Your backup footprint is exceeding primary storage footprint.
  • Data recovery is so slow that you struggle in keeping up the database.

The blessings of application-managed, storage-integrated data protection solutions

What if we combined the benefits of backups and snapshots in a solution that is not only integrated with your storage, but is also managed by the SQL Server DBA?

That’s what HPE StoreOnce Recovery Manager Central (RMC) for SQL Server offers. It integrates HPE 3PAR StoreServ primary storage with HPE StoreOnce Systems to provide a converged availability and flat backup service for SQL Server environments that augments traditional backup approaches. Here are the benefits:

  • Speed up backup and recovery of SQL Server databases: First, by integrating with SQL Server through Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), 3PAR Virtual Copy creates consistent, non-disruptive time- and space-efficient SQL Server-aware snapshots. Then, you can quickly restore your database and log files and deliver on your aggressive Recovery Time Objective (RTO) SLAs. A SQL Server instance-level restore can include a volume restore and a file-level restore. And remember, since only changed data blocks are sent to StoreOnce, your database recovery is faster and more efficient.
  • Reduce cost and complexity: With RMC Express Protect, you can do a flat backup of SQL Server snapshot data volumes directly from 3PAR to StoreOnce. And since the stored backups on StoreOnce are deduplicated, you don’t have to worry about backup storage sky rocketing and in fact, can economically store data on StoreOnce for extended periods.
  • Lower risk during unplanned downtime: With frequent recovery points, you can commit to tight Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) SLAs. If there is a failed hardware or a data center outage, the SQL Server backups on StoreOnce can be restored to the original or a different 3PAR. As an added benefit, backups can also be copied from one StoreOnce to another in case of disasters.
  • Take control of your SQL Server backups: As a DBA, you can monitor and manage snapshots, backup, and recovery directly and seamlessly from within SQL Studio by clicking on the RMC GUI link.

The best of both worlds to create a converged SQL Server data protection solution

HPE StoreOnce Recovery Manager Central for SQL Server seamlessly integrates robust flash-optimized HPE 3PAR StoreServ primary storage and the very fast, scalable, and highly resilient StoreOnce Backup System. The result is a converged data protection solution that simply and efficiently delivers the end-to-end availability and backup that your SQL Server environment demands.
