More ways to size and support scalable object storage solutions

HPE scalable object storage_blog.jpg

In yesterday’s announcement blog about our new HPE Apollo 4510 Gen10 system, you saw that it is purpose-built for object storage and lends itself to HPC environments as a data archive platform. HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING runs on ProLiant DL servers as well as the Apollo 4200 and 4510 models and can provide a highly-scalable, geo-dispersed active archive. In HPC environments and others, an active archive solution optimizes the placement and retention of massive amounts of data with always-online access and cloud-scale economics, robustness and resilience.

Whether you’ve been looking at a scalable object storage solution for a while or are new to the product, we’ve had a couple of updates as well as new HPE solution offerings that I want to tell you about.

Software Updates

In June, Scality released the RING 7 software series with an emphasis on storage management, in addition to great security features. In concert with Scality, we’ve focused on additional integration of HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING on our HPE Apollo storage servers.  With RING software version 7.2 (released in September), Scality introduced a new easier-to-read admin GUI with more graphs to provide a quick-view of system metrics, including HPE hard disk health reporting through HPE Smart Array controller cards installed in the Apollo 4000 platforms. This feature is immediately available upon applying the software update.

In October’s release, RING version 7.3 improvements make installation of Scality RING systems faster for on-site deployments. A full RING can be installed in as little as an hour by the support technician.

Platform and Storage support

You may have seen some of the recent news about our latest generation of server platforms with the most recent Intel Xeon processors and state-of-the-art security technologies. The newest server platform supported by Scality RING is the HPE Apollo 4510 Gen10 System. In addition to the great 600TB storage density of this platform – in a 4U standard rack depth format, HPE is bringing more NVMe options to market which are ideal for the metadata storage in Scality RING. By moving the use of metadata flash storage to NVMe PCIe cards, the full capacity of the storage system within the 4510 can be used for bulk storage of object files. This is supported not only in our newest Apollo 4510 Gen10, but also in the 4510 Gen9 and the Apollo 4200 Gen9 platforms.

New Solution Sizing Tool

HPE has created a new sizing tool for Scality RING for use by sales and channel partners to help tune configurations for HPE Apollo 4000 Systems. This newest version of the tool offers a web-based GUI that makes it more intuitive to use, while also providing easy-to-read graphics to quickly summarize the configuration. Ask your HPE sales person or channel partner for more information.

Solution Response from HPE Pointnext

Beginning in December, HPE Customer Support Centers will add first-call response support call handling for HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING. This means first level support will help customers on the full solution, both hardware and software. Scality RING software issues not able to be resolved by HPE Pointnext will be transferred to Scality support. HPE will track to resolution software questions which are passed to Scality for expert assistance. With this expanded support service from HPE Pointnext, you can make one phone call to HPE for coordinated support on your entire HPE Scalable Object Storage environment.

Step Up Program from HPE Financial Services

Also starting in December, HPE Financial Services will offer the Step Up Program for HPE Scalable Object Storage with Scality RING. This investment solution provides a flexible payment option that minimizes upfront costs and better aligns your infrastructure costs to your expected business outcomes. The financial program lets customers deploy 100% of the technology solution on Day 1, while allowing them to start with small payments that scale over the first 12 months and level off thereafter. At the end of the contract period, the customer owns the software licenses, and can buy out the hardware at a fair market price or return it and upgrade.
