Protect your SQL Server database against disasters with HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 All-Flash

No compromise when it comes to deploying your mission-critical SQL Server database on HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 All Flash.

One of my favorite topics is talking about the benefits of protecting your mission-critical SQL Server database with HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 All Flash. Today I have more good news: we’ll be demonstrating this solution in the HP Booth at Microsoft Ignite 2015, May 4 – 8 in Chicago. So come and check it out!


Imagine being able to process all the orders flooding into your order entry database in a flash—while making sure that your mission-critical database is always-on despite an outage, an earthquake or a tornado! Try connecting your SQL Server database to HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 All Flash storage and watch how the high performance and resiliency demands of your database can be easily met.


Often, you have to compromise performance if you want to keep your database always running or you have to compromise uptime if you don’t want to experience any performance degradation in your database. However, with HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450, you are assured that your database is always up, despite disasters, without impacting performance.


Let’s look at disaster recovery and performance separately.


Always-on SQL Server 2014 with HP 3PAR Peer Persistence

For disaster recovery, first consider HP 3PAR Peer Persistence software that enables HP 3PAR StoreServ systems located at metropolitan distances to act as peers to each other. This presents a nearly continuous storage system to database hosts and servers connected to them. This capability allows you to configure a high-availability (HA) disaster recovery (DR) solution for your SQL Server environment between two sites or data centers where switchover and switchback remains transparent to the database running on those hosts.


What’s the benefit of using Peer Persistence with Windows clustering in a SQL Server environment? All I/Os to storage are synchronously mirrored to another storage system via synchronous remote copy. even if there is a site failure, when the Windows cluster recovers, all data is written to the storage system and acknowledged – and will be fully available on the secondary storage system located at another site. A few tips to remember: To achieve optimal performance, make sure SQL Server storage disks are owned by the parent cluster server hosting the virtual machine running the SQL Server instance. Move disks used by SQL Server to the node hosting the virtual machine running SQL Server.

Now let’s talk about performance. HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 Storage delivers ultra-high Config.jpgperformance with sub-millisecond latencies through a flash-optimized design that removes architectural bottlenecks. These bottlenecks can prevent other storage platforms from taking full advantage of flash-based media in SQL Server OLTP environments. This flash-optimized design relies on unique HP 3PAR StoreServ innovations:

  • Adaptive read and write software – Reduces performance bottlenecks by matching SQL Server host I/O size reads and writes to flash media to avoid unnecessary data reads and writes. This significantly reduces latency and enhances back-end performance to enable more consolidation of SQL Server database instances. It also helps extend flash media lifespan to protect your storage investments.
  • Autonomic cache offload – Reduces cache bottlenecks by automatically changing the frequency at which SQL Server data is offloaded from cache to flash media, based on utilization rate and without requiring any user intervention. This helps deliver consistently high performance levels as you scale the SQL Server OLTP workload to hundreds of thousands of IOPS.
  • Multi-tenant I/O processing – Enables performance improvement when running multiple SQL Server instances by breaking large I/O requests into smaller chunks so that small read requests don’t get held up or stuck behind larger I/O requests.
