Pushing flash storage boundaries: it’s more than just fashionable

By Jenna Colleran, 3PAR Product Marketing, HP Storage

The spotlight continues to shine on flash storage. Another case in point: Industry analyst firm DCIG recently ranked the HP 3PAR StoreServ 20000 product “Best-in-Class” in its 2015-2016 All-Flash Array Buyer’s Guide. DCIG awards the coveted “Best-in-Class” designation to the product with the most comprehensive set of features. This year, the recognition goes to 3PAR StoreServ 20000.

DCIG ranks features of each All-Flash array on criteria that matter most to the end users, and the 20000 series scored “Best-in-Class" in all four of these categories:

  • Overall
  • Management & Software
  • Virtualization
  • Hardware

HP 3PAR StoreServ 20000 is not the only 3PAR StoreServ product to gain recognition.

DCIG ranks the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000c series “Recommended” and it achieved “Best-in-Class” in the Virtualization category.

So what’s the value behind this leadership award?

Without a doubt, it’s always great to be recognized for leadership in your industry and we are thrilled to receive this honor from DCIG. Thanks for letting us tout our great win. But let’s talk about the real significance of this Buyer’s Guide.

When DCIG published its last Flash Memory Storage Array Buyer’s Guide about 18 months ago, many vendors reported that their customers were looking to migrate to an all-flash environment to only support their business-critical applications. But now, these same customers are looking to run all their application workloads in an All-Flash environment.

Ken Clipperton, managing analyst and co-author of this year’s Buyer’s Guide, describes the All-Flash revolution best: “The barriers to All-Flash adoption have been substantially reduced. When we [DCIG] first introduced our guide for flash arrays in 2012, there was still a discussion over terminology and effective use cases for All-Flash systems. And it wasn’t just about terminology in 2012. The first arrays had limited capacity and data services and as a result, All-Flash systems were deployed to tackle specific storage-related pain points. Fast forward to today, and you can find All-Flash solutions with comprehensive sets of features expected of an enterprise storage array.”

In just 18 months between DCIG’s Flash Buyer’s Guides, the flash marketplace has doubled flash capacity, increased flash density to 50%, and reduced entry prices to less than $25,000 (think the all new HP 3PAR StoreServ 8200 All-Flash Starter Kit).

What’s driving the flash revolution?

We like to think we had a hand in shaping this high-speed evolution, starting with the 3PAR StoreServ 7450 in 2013 that offered application acceleration built on a proven architecture. From there we turned our attention to improved SLAs—with features like Priority Optimization to ensure performance for your most mission-critical applications in a multi-tenant environment.

Last year, we introduced Adaptive Sparing that improved the efficiency of the solid-state media in our array and really made flash more affordable. And earlier this year, we introduced the HP 3PAR StoreServ 20000 series with usable flash capacity at $1.50/GB and flash-optimized replication.

Moving ahead, our focus continues to be on delivering storage for the All-Flash data center that delivers affordability, application acceleration and resiliency. But best of all, our customers are telling us that we are solving their real-world IT problems—helping them lower costs, deliver more value to their business and become more agile as they move toward the All-Flash data center.

Where All-Flash is always in fashion

Our customer Stella & Dot agreed to share their story about upgrading legacy storage system to HP 3PAR StoreServ All-Flash. A quick summary: This online fashion jewelry, accessories and cosmetics company rapidly increased its number of independent business owners to over 30,000 worldwide and needed the best available storage system to ensure high reliability and performance. Its new array performs twenty times faster. Combined with a smaller footprint and lower power costs, the 3PAR All-Flash has helped Stella & Dot save. The online company has even been able to launch two new business lines and still had plenty of storage system left to support future business endeavors.

Two winning traits for flash storage

With over twenty-eight offerings from eighteen different companies, DCIG is able to provide a comprehensive review of All-Flash products that can be used to validate customer success stories, like Stella & Dot’s.

This year, DCIG awarded the HP 3PAR StoreServ 20000 “Best-in-Class” for a number of reasons, and we are sure that you will agree with Stella & Dot’s principle systems engineer that HP is “leading edge and reliable.”
