Reporting in from HP Discover

By Federica Monsone, A3 Communications, for HP Storage

FRED4.jpgAfter months of planning, conference calls, tweets and blog posts, HP Discover EMEA is a wrap. Here’s a look at what I learned this week—insights, observations, revelations. After getting to Barcelona on Monday and catching up with a few people at the hotel we shared, I travelled to the Fira Barcelona Gran Via with a few bloggers who were also staying at the Fira Palace hotel. Keen not to miss any of the action, we got to the venue before the Blogger Lounge had actually opened so we waited outside one of the halls. What is immediately apparent is the sheer size of the event. Spread over four halls, it offers a lot of content, more than anyone can take in over a few days. I was eager to experience it, especially since this is my first HP Discover.

Relevant content at every turn at HP Discover

Having spent a couple of days walking around, attending sessions, talking to bloggers, journalists, analysts, delegates and of course HP executives and staff, I think that what really stands out is the quality of the content available to people. The various formats information is presented in—from coffee talks to business breakouts and from the technology showcase area to the discussion forums (plus lots of ad hoc one-to-one discussions)—ensure that everyone can find plenty of relevant content to make the most of their time here.

There is a buzz in the air, and not just because of the various demos and HP Storage and HP Converged Systems news announcements made at the event. You can tell that the event is well received. Wherever you turn people are engrossed in conversations, checking out products or catching up with contacts they haven’t seen in a while. I’ve even spotted a few budding photographers taking “selfies” with an HP kit in the background. Talk about being excited to be here!

Technology backed by impressive numbers

The main message HP is conveying is clear: as your partner we want you to be successful and we have the right technology to help you achieve that. Meg Whitman, John Hinshaw, David Scott and Chris Johnson are just some of the executive speakers who made this clear. And they have the numbers to impress us with:

  • If the cloud was a country it would be the fifth highest energy user in the world.
  • Datacentres today account for 2% of total power usage but in a few years this will shoot up to 30%.
  • We will have 40ZB of data by 2020.
  • HP StoreOnce Backup has seen a massive 70% YoY growth.

And the customers HP has brought on stage are singing off the same hymn sheet: Dreamworks, Twentieth Century Fox and Conservation International all maintain that hp was instrumental in their ability to become more agile and efficient.

Rich roster of storage sessions

While I was waiting for one of the sessions to start, I was leafing through the sessions schedule. I don’t think there is a single storage topic that isn’t covered: ROI, flash, software-defined storage, data protection, virtualisation, networking, archiving and of course Big Data to name a few. I don’t think any another vendor event offers the same breadth of coverage when it comes to data storage

But the quantity of information and number of solutions here is not an issue: the way they are laid out in the venue over the four halls helps attendees easily plan and navigate the show. Take Hall 5 for example, where the Blogger Lounge I’ve been based in is situated: there is a Technology Showcase, where visitors can get a glimpse into future technologies HP is focusing on, and areas dedicated to servers, networking, storage, converged infrastructure, cloud and Big Data.

As I spent more time at HP Discover, I realised quite how the focus on learning and exchanging information and ideas is at the core of the relationship the company has with its customers and partners. After all it’s only by understanding customers' challenges, needs and plans that HP can continue to deliver the solutions and services that have helped it get where it is today, at the top of its game.
