The HPE Apollo 4000: enabling you to master data growth and establish market advantage

HPE_ELEMENT_1077038326-A_800_0_72_RGB.pngAcross industries, digital transformation is a near-universal goal, but it’s really data that’s setting the terms — and accelerating the pace — of digitalization. Organizations are collecting unprecedented amounts of data, and they need a means of efficiently storing, accessing, and analysing all that data in order to deliver business value. Where a typical enterprise once took in structured data from mission-critical applications and stored it away, that same business is now handling many new varieties of unstructured data — think sensors, video feeds, and hardware telemetry, to name just a few.

Here’s one very topical example: demand for medical imaging was already growing rapidly before COVID-19 disrupted everyone’s lives; now, in the age of pandemic, imaging needs are surging again. That’s all unstructured data, and for it to be useful to medical staff, it needs to be safely stored, quickly searchable, and immediately accessible.

By 2025, IDC predicts the current storm of data will exceed 163 zettabytes a year globallyWith dramatic data growth spread across industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, retail, financial services, public sector, media, and entertainment, every enterprise faces an enormous and urgent challenge, because the organizations that master data will establish market advantage into the future.

Data storage architectures need a rethink

As enterprises rush to adopt data strategies that will yield data-centric businesses, they are recognizing bottlenecks in their storage infrastructure that point to three principal challenges IT teams face on the journey to digitalization:

  • As data gets ingested into the enterprise, it is natural for IT to be reactive to this deluge, and start building information silos to support the different enterprise functions.
  • As the needs arise to store a large quantity of small and large files, objects and more, admins need the tools to streamline management of vast amounts of data. They often end up stitching together off-the-shelf products that each address specific problems.
  • Every modern enterprise requires their IT to support a variety of workloads such as batch processing, real-time streaming, Big Data, predictive analytics, and backup & disaster recovery.

Faced with this landscape of unstructured data demands, enterprises need a flexible solution that delivers an intelligent, density-optimized infrastructure to accommodate data storage at massive scale. AI-driven predictive analytics and holistic data security should be built into the platform itself. Moreover, this ideal storage solution should support a robust ecosystem of partner integrations that meaningfully expand the platform’s ability to deliver efficient, cost-effective storage.

Enter HPE Apollo 4000

Several years ago, seeing a need in the marketplace for just this kind of unstructured data storage solution, we engineered the HPE Apollo 4000 to meet the needs of enterprises with large amounts of unstructured data to store. We extended the architecture in two critical ways.

First, we engineered HPE Apollo 4000 to deliver elastic storage optimized for analytics. With a low-latency tier of density-optimized storage for Big Data and ML/DL workloads, as well as orchestration for an end-to-end data pipeline, we made it simple for enterprises to deploy AI-driven applications in production.

Second, we expanded HPE Apollo 4000 so it’s no longer just a storage system. Rather, it’s an entire ecosystem supported by integrations with key scale-out data platform providers. Together with these strategic partners, we have purpose-built scale-out solutions on top of Apollo 4000 systems to specifically address the rising scale of unstructured data, in one architecture. These solutions are optimized for data-driven use-cases across industries.

Let’s take a brief look.

Unify non-latency sensitive data management. HPE Apollo 4000, combined with Cohesity DataPlatform software, enables consolidation of non-latency sensitive data silos. Examples include backup and recovery, archive, file and object test/dev, analytics, and associated management functions, with a single scale-out, software-defined platform that efficiently protects, stores, and manages fast-growing data stores.

Solve data blindness with scale-out file storage. Together with Qumulo, HPE Apollo 4000 provides a cloud-native, enterprise proven, highly scalable file storage solution that runs in your datacenter and/or the cloud. It can be deployed in minutes, provides real-time visibility for instant control, scales on-demand, and is tuned for consistent high performance.

Deliver a limitless pool of object storage. Finally, HPE provides Scality RING scalable storage with its HPE Apollo 4000 platform to deliver massively scalable, multi-cloud data stores. This creates a virtually unlimited pool of unstructured data, which is always protected, always on-line, and accessible from anywhere. Customers achieve the simplicity and agility of cloud with the benefits of a density-optimized, on-prem platform designed for storage-centric workloads. With the lower total cost of ownership, improved staff efficiency, and drastically lesser downtime, this has resulted in an average of a 271% return on their investment over three years.

Get all this goodness as-a-service

How do you further improve on the intelligence, massive scale, and ecosystem support that enable HPE Apollo 4000 systems to accelerate data storage-centric workloads across your environment? By offering that power — including the above-mentioned software-defined storage partner solutions — on-demand and as-a-service via HPE GreenLake. Greenlake, a consumption-based deployment model, delivers on-demand capacity and planning, combining the agility and economics that you would experience with the public cloud.

It’s a remarkable set of capabilities

So let’s recap. The above-mentioned capabilities make the HPE Apollo 4000 Systems a foundational building block for storing large amounts of data in a dense hardware, helping to manage unstructured data efficiently, using scale-out data platforms. HPE Apollo 4000 is a versatile foundation that, together with scale-out data platforms from strategic partners, solves the most significant data storage challenges organizations face on their journey to digital transformation. It can eliminate the silos and complexity that are otherwise the hallmark of enterprise datacenters trying to cope with a deluge of data. It can accelerate the AI and analytics initiatives that will likely determine a company’s future. And its intelligent cloud experience can be consumed as-a-service.
