The HPE StoreEasy management console version 1.2 is here

The HPE StoreEasy management console brings new dashboards that reveal component health more concisely, deliver historic performance and capacity monitoring, and predict when you’re running out of capacity.

HPE_Blog.jpgWe just released version 1.2 of the management console for our sixth-generation HPE StoreEasy 1000 NAS Storage family. Apart from numerous bug fixes and reliability improvements, this version primarily delivers on two commonly requested capabilities that help you better maintain your StoreEasy system. These new capabilities feature historical capacity reporting that helps you predict when your system will run out of capacity and historical performance reporting that help you identify maintenance windows more conveniently.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these two new capabilities this release offers and what challenges they solve for customers using the sixth-generation HPE StoreEasy 1000 storage family.

Historical capacity reporting and prediction

In our last release of the management console, we introduced capacity shortage notifications that are triggered when your system’s overall capacity utilization crosses a customizable threshold. Users of the management console can set a custom capacity utilization percentage and, when reached, receive an email notification that informs them to either expand capacity or remove unneeded data to free up capacity.

But as all storage administrators out there already know, a point-in-time view on capacity utilization is not particularly helpful for predicting when a storage system runs out of space. If my system’s capacity utilization is at 80% today, it can take a day or a year until it is full, depending on the capacity growth rate. Instead of just reporting a single value there is a need to periodically report capacity utilization and identify a trend in order to confidently predict when capacity is running out. This is not necessarily a complicated procedure, but it is a time-consuming process.

HPE developed the management console software for HPE StoreEasy specifically to simplify managing NAS and to minimize these burdensome tasks. With this goal in mind, the newly introduced historical capacity dashboard presents you with the estimated number of days left until your system needs capacity expansion, available after 30 days of measurements.

Additionally, the capacity trend and the growth rate chart help you validate and understand the predicted saturation date in a simple, customizable visual.

Historical performance reporting

Similar to historical capacity reporting, the reports for performance in version 1.2 has been enhanced to include historical metrics instead of just a point-in-time view of the system. These metrics include internal system throughput, network throughput and connected file sharing clients.

In addition to understanding the performance of the storage system, having access to the number of connected clients enables administrators to easily identify if they can securely maintain it without impacting any ongoing workloads.

Historical reporting of the number of client connections along with the performance throughput information also helps to plan for maintenance windows—those time ranges where there is little or no activity on your StoreEasy system.

These are just two of the many enhancements that we’ve made in version 1.2 of the HPE StoreEasy management console that simplifies file storage management for Windows Storage Server 2016.

We already have a long list to further improve the management experience of StoreEasy, and we want to hear even more. Leave a comment below if there are features you would like to see in the next releases of the StoreEasy management console.
