What's new with HPE MSA? A podcast
The HPE MSA Storage team has a few updates to the MSA family and I suggested to them a great way to get that information out to you is a podcast. They bit and I have a new ATSB podcast talking about what's new with HPE MSA. Joining me on the podcast are Britt Terry and Keith Schlachter, both long-time storage guys at HPE.
Here's a link to the podcast.
To subscribe to the podcast, open this link and click on the "View in iTunes" button under my picture. If you don't use iTunes, you can find my podcast on TalkShoe.com, Google Play Music. and just added to Spotify Podcast, and Stitcher! On Google, you'll get "invited" to try Google Play Music for 30 days - just click "no thanks" to get past this and get to the podcast.
Summarizing what's new with MSA
Here's what we talked about in the podcast with a little bit of detail about the new bits:
- 00:00 - 00:45 Introduction.
- 00:45 - 03:00 Where does MSA fit in the HPE Storage portfolio.
- 03:00 - 04:30 Summarizing what's new: new HDD & SSD, ecosystem integration with HPE Complete partners (Arxscan and Zerto), and MSA Heath Checker.
- 04:30 - 12:00 Details on MSA Heath Checker including which MSA products support it. The MSA Health Checker is a simple-to-use tool containing machine-driven analytics that dynamically checks for signatures of known issues and validates against best-practice recommendations.
- 12:00 - 15:00 New 14TB large form factor (LFF) HDDs. We also discussed what is happening with LFF and SFF HDDs. The new 14TB LFF HDDs provides 9% lower $/GB for more cost effective archival storage.
- 15:00 - 18:30 Adoption of flash storage with entry storage.
- 18:30 - 21:00 New generation SSDs (960GB and 1.92TB) that reduce the $/GB for flash by 60%. Also, we discussed general characterization of performance between HDD and SSDs.
- 21:00 - 26:30 HPE Complete partner Arxscan. With Arxscan, customers can dynamically monitor all of their MSA arrays regardless of location. Customers can view information including firmware version for their controllers, drives, or enclosures. Easily obtain valuable reports of Storage Utilization details including raw capacity, usable capacity, total allocation or usage trends by array.
- 26:30 - 30:00 HPE Complete partner Zerto. Zerto software was developed on VMware around use case of simplified replication. Zerto helps extend the MSA to include near synchronous replication. We also discussed using MSA with Zerto as a good fit for customers that were using StoreVirtual VSA.
- 30:00 - 30:45 Wrap-up.
You can learn more about the MSA family on the MSA Family hpe.com page. Also, for a good introduction to the MSA, check out my MSA Chalk Talk that is on YouTube.
