Why is HP 3PAR StoreServ selling like hotcakes?

I love hotcakes! When I was a child, I looked forward to opportunities I had to stay over night at my Uncle Jim and Aunt Mary's house.  Uncle Jim was a cook in the army during World War II and made the best hotcakes I've ever had.  It used to be a contest to see how many I could eat.  Now these weren't tiny hotcakes but probably 6-8" in diameter.  I remember one time I ate 23 and that was the record. 


Why did I want them so much - because he had some secret ingredients he put into this hotcakes that made them stand out head and shoulders above any others.  I feel the same way about HP 3PAR StoreServ.  And I've been talking about my confidence in our portfolio and that things were going to turn around.  Well, my patience has paid off.  Neither me or anyone else at HP Storage is doing a victory lap but I can't help but feel great about what's been happening. 


I have a podcast with Chris Champagne.  Chris was the first 3PAR representative in Canada and continues to be a leader in HP Storage in Canada.  Chris sent me an email a few weeks ago showing me the IDC Q4 2013 Storage Tracker, for Mid-Range SAN Storage Revenue for Canada.  The results blew me away and I told Chris we had to do a podcast to talk about it.  In the podcast we talk about more than the results so give it a listen.

But wait, that's not all!

The response from customers has my confidence in HP Storage soaring.  There have been a number of recent articles that go further to validate what I've been feeling and I wanted to share them with you.

  • via The Register and reporter Chris Mellor is "Analyse this: Gartner eyes up EVERYONE'S mid-range arrays".  The article talks about a report called Critical Capabilities for General-Purpose, Midrange Storage Arrays.  It evaluates critical capabilities, scoring each on a 1 to 5 scale, and then uses differentiated weightings in various use case scenarios that include server virtualization, OLTP, Cloud, and others.  The article doesn't give the data for each use case but instead presents the overall use case which had HP 3PAR on top.  Great substantiation of what I've been saying about our differentiated architecture!
  • via CRN and Joe Kovar, "The Comeback Kid: HP Q4 Storage Sales Up 25 Percent, Says Gartner".  The article talks about our Q4 growth - the highest growth rate in the entire industry at 25.3%.   The article says, "HP's fourth-quarter 2013 storage business grew 25.3 percent vs. the same period last year, helping it overtake Hitachi and HDS to become the fourth largest storage vendor in the quarter at $600.7 million. That puts HP on a trajectory to possibly overtake NetApp for the No. 3 position."

So I hope you see why my enthusiasm over the last couple of years was well founded!


A sneak peak

You probably know that I was in South Africa recently because I was invited to speak at an HP Storage event that our country team drove.  The host of that event was Derick Watts - Derick was voted best male TV presenter in South Africa for several years in a row.  I finally got around to putting together the audio of my 20 minutes of fame with Derick. I'll have a separate blog post in the next week or so going deeper with a few other segments from the event and some pictures as well.  For now, here's the podcast of my interview with Derick.

I'd certainly be interested in hearing/seeing what % of that $600M was 3PAR related vs other HP mid range storage products.


Obviously I am a long time 3PAR customer/fan so am happy to see it continue to do well. From a technical standpoint I knew they had it nailed and believed HP was the right partner for 3PAR back when HP won the bidding war vs Dell.


That Gartner mid range array report seemed rather weak to me, they basically claimed "everyone is the same" when for the technically inclined there are significant differences in several of the products they test, vast rifts in capabilities, performance and scalability. Would you seriously consider a Oracle ZFS appliance as the same as a 3PAR box ? Or a Coraid ? Dot hill???(sort of aka P2000?) Really??? Next thing you might see is they toss in something like Nexenta on white box hardware.. Was good to see Nimble in there they seem to be a pretty good contender.. though I suspect they didn't get enough points for performance relative to other platforms.


The report concludes the customers should go for a solution that optimizes agility and minimizes operational costs - two metrics they do not seem to measure at all.


Sort of makes me wonder if Gartner just used a random number generator to get the results. Nice to see 3PAR on top of course regardless....
