Nimble HF20H and UPS Compatibility - HPE R5000 vs APC Smart-UPS
During acceptance testing we've found a problem with our Nimble HF20H and the HPE R5000 UPSs it's connected to. The Nimble has two power supplies and each power supply is connected to a different HPE R5000 UPS. We have have three Aruba network switches and 3 DL380 servers also dual connected to the HPE R5000 UPSs.
If we remove mains power from one or other HPE R5000 it goes into UPS mode and everything keeps operating as normal. However, if we remove mains power from both HPE R5000 UPSs at the same time the Nimble HF20H reboots! The switches and servers are fine. Only the Nimble HF20H reboots.
We've double and triple checked that the Nimble HF20H is connected to the UPSs and done tests ( notably to turn off the UPS outputs to show that doing that remove power from the respective Nimble power supply ) and are absolutely sure that all the equipment is on the same UPSs.
Further testing found that when an HPE R5000 switches to batter mode the OUT LED on the attached Nimble HF20H's power supply goes from green, to off, to amber to green again. This indicates to us that the Nimble's power supply is not happy with the output of the HPE R5000 UPS when the UPS switches to battery mode.
If both HPE R5000 UPSs switch to battery mode at the same time - as would be expected when the mains power supply to the building fails - then both Nimble HF20H power supplies will experience their respective HPE R5000 UPS switching and then momentarily both will stop powering the array!
This is exactly what we saw in our whole building power off testing done on Jan 5th.
As a temporary measure one of the Nimble HF20H's power supplies is now connected to an APC Smart-UPS and testing shows that the connected Nimble power supply has no problem when the APC Smart-UPS switches to battery mode - and back again.
It's seems that Nimble HF20Hs and HPE R5000 UPSs don't work well together.
While we'll be taking this up with our systems integrator, does anyone else have similar or different experiences?

Re: Nimble HF20H and UPS Compatibility - HPE R5000 vs APC Smart-UPS
Hi Dinesh,
I should have mentioned that I'd done that earlier in the week and we're working with Nimble to resolve this issue.
Regards,
Guy
