I am trying to remove or unmask some luns from 2 esxi hosts. I have taken the iqn out of the initiator group from these luns, did a rescan of the iscsi hba but still shows up as available on these hosts
any idea what is causing this?

SolutionTony,
Are you saying that you pulled the IQN out of the Nimbe UI [or gui]? The LUNs that are visible on the ESX hosts are they still writable? Are they showing as online?
There are a few steps needed to remove a LUN from ESX's inventory outside of using NCM. The beauty of using the NCM for VMware, it takes care of these house keeping steps.
Take a look at this document:

Re: initiator has no access to lun but still shows up
Hi,
This could be an old post but can you send pr repost the instructions for safe removal of Initiators from vCenter as i've removed the IQN's from the Nimble end but still showing datastores are connected. Support opened a case to say 'Volume Connections will not Recover from any Disruption'. The link on this post to the doc is dead.
Much appreciated,
Declan
