2824 firmware on 3400cl
Hello,
The switch is a 3400cl J4905a with 2824 J4903a firmware loaded and running. The current version is M.08.6x and I'd like to update to M.10.102 by first loading M.10.10 for bootrom update. The problem I have is, the switch will not let me load J4905a firmware, I receive 00000K Wrong File error. How do I bypass the firmware version check so I can get the proper swi file to load??
Thanks,
Jon

Re: 2824 firmware on 3400cl
You have to do a stepped upgrade. You need to start with M.10.41, to get the I.08.12 bootrom, according to the M.10.76 release notes. Unfortunately, M.10.41 isn't on the web site. You will need to call support and they can provide you the software you need. This is all documented in the release notes:
M.10.102: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c04407063
M.10.76: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c02564418
By the way, the "M" software is for the 3400 series switches. Your 2820 uses "I" software builds.

Re: 2824 firmware on 3400cl
Thanks for the response Eric. I understand a stepped upgrade is required and that is what I'm attempting. If you notice, the documentation referenced requires a person to use M.10.10 before M.10.41 can be installed. That software is on the website and it is the software I'm trying to load. My problem is the switch has been told its a 2800 series switch from its current software. I'd like to load 3400 software but the switch looks at the software and errors out becuase it thinks its a 2800.
for clearification - The switch is physically a 3400cl It thinks it's a 2800 switch The current software is M.08.6x
I need to ugrade to M.10.10 then to M.10.102 but when I try to load M.10.10 the switch errors.

Re: 2824 firmware on 3400cl
What gives you the indication that the switch thinks its a 2824? I have never seen a software build load onto a switch it wasn't supported on and that said, the software you are running. M.08.6x, is for the 3400cl. I also find it odd to have a version with an "x" in the number. Is there any chance the switch is a prototype or running beta software? It shouldn't matter, but I am curious.
Can you share the output of the attempted upgrade and the output of "show flash".

Re: 2824 firmware on 3400cl
HP switch# show config
Startup configuration:
; J4903A Configuration Editor; Created on release #M.08.6X
J4903A is a 2800 series switch, the only way I know of how to load configurations from different series switches is to modify the config file's model number to match the series of the hardware. I can load 2800 config files with J4903A models and cannot load J4905A config files which should be on this 3400.
Thanks again for your help Eric!

Re: 2824 firmware on 3400cl
That is really wierd. I have never seen anything like it. Have you tried doing a factory reset or erase startup-config? I wonder if that would reset the J # in the config. Otherwise, you might try doing an update to M.10.10 via the bootrom and Xmodem. It is really slow but might work.

Re: 2824 firmware on 3400cl
I can't think of any other option short of replacing the switch. It should have a lifetime warranty so support should be able to replace it if you want to go that route.
Anybody else have an idea?

Re: 2824 firmware on 3400cl
A little more digging and I found
- log in (console, telnet, SSH, etc.) to the CLI
- type тАЬedomtsetтАЭ and hit enter
- type тАЬedomtsetтАЭ and hit enter (yes, again)
- the prompt will change from тАЬ#тАЭ to тАЬ$тАЭ
- hit ? to see what you can do
- type тАЬexitтАЭ and hit enter when youтАЩre done
This brings up a much deeper command set where I found a command that shows my rom version. This switch is actually running I.08.02 rom with M.08.6x image.
More to do.....
