HP J9145A Switch ports 21T and 23T indicated as 10/100/1000-T on switch, but actually 1000SX

Hello. I configured a HP 2910-24G al Switch (J9145A) and noticed something strange. On the switch, ports 21T and 23T are RJ-45 ports (indicated by red circle in Figure 1). However, logging into the switch using a web browser, under Device View, ports 21T and 23T type is shown as 1000SX (Figure 2): this is ment for fibre optic ports even though the physical port on the switches are RJ-45 ports. Connecting this switch to another switch or edge device using ports 21T and 23T do not work (port LEDs do not light up). Whats wrong with the J9145A model?

Hello

You are working with dual personallty ports. you choose how you want to use those ports.

Or you can choose to use them as UTP OR you can use them as fiber ports.

As you can see port 21r-24r corresponds with the port 21s-24s. Notice the grey color around the ports.

So as i can see,  are you already using  ports 21s and 23s, that means ur ports 21r and 23r will be in shut(and so not usable) till there is nothing connected in their corresponding ports 21s and 23s.

Hopes this was clear enough :)

Just one microscopic correction to what @HP-Browniee so correctly described: it is 21T-24T and not 21R-24R, where T on port stands for Base-T (Copper) and S on Slot stands for SFP (Fiber Optic or Copper Transceiver) I think.

Dual Personality, as it is intended, is a either/or physical feature and not an and/and...so your Switch has physical 4 more ports other than the 24th port but hasn't really 4 more ports that can be used concurrently with the latest four (21T-24T), it only has then available IF you don't use the corresponding ones (T or S) and viceversa.
