Import switch configuration with xmodem - failure

Hi

After an update the image on the primary partition got corrupted.

The switch has a second partition with a backup image but it's also corrupted (I have no clue why).

Switch used: HP ProCurve 2510-24 J9019-A

Build Version: Q.10.02

Updated Version: Q.11.67 (primary partition got corrupted)

After that happened, the switch booted in ROM-Mode.

Output from "version"

Directory: /sw/rom/build/harprom(harp)
Build Date: 11:18:33 Jul 28 2006
Version: Q.10.02
Build #: 11350

Output from "jp 1" and "jp 2" (jump)

No valid image found in primary location.
No valid image found in secondary location.

The switch is connected with a serial cable to a client. Also he has a connection to the internet.

When I try to execute "download" (Download via Xmodem and only option in this mode!) :

You have invoked the console download utility.
Do you wish to continue? (Y/N)>

When I press "Y" nothing happens. After half a minute an error-message appears:

ERROR: Download was unsuccessful. Rx failed @ffffffff

Can anyone help me with this?

Are there "hidden" options to use tftp or download the file directly from a client in the network?

Attached is a picture which shows all options given when using "?" or "help"

Greetings

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious but after you select download, you should be going into the  Xmodem menu in your terminal client application* and uploading the file.

*Or possibly finding a better one first.

Re: Import switch configuration with xmodem - failure

Hello Richard

Yes, you're right it "should" be going into the xmodem menu. My problem is that the xmodem menu doesn't show after I entered the command and pressed "Y" to confirm.

Are there any commands to debug or show me a log? I couldn't find something on the web.

As I mentioned before, the xmodem command interupts after half a minute with an error code.

I also tried to use another file, same result.

Here are a couple of links that might help:

http://www.ipuptime.net/2012/07/procurve-corrupted-flash-recovery/

http://notesbytom.wordpress.com/2012/08/23/hp-procurve-software-update-via-xmodem/

Second one isn't in monitor mode but shows in more detail how it looks from the client end.

Re: Import switch configuration with xmodem - failure

Hello Richard

I tried the guide in the first link and... it worked!

I guess my mistake was that I didn't set the baudrate high enough and because of that the switch timed out.

(The first time where de baud rate was 9600, the switch timed out but as soon as I changed the baud rate to 115200 the switch downloaded the file and was able to make the configuration)

At the end it was a little mistake... thank you very much for helping me :)

Re: Import switch configuration with xmodem - failure

Well ... too early

After I made a reboot the switch was able to start but after "initializing..." an error occured:

Config Error - Initialization Stopped

Waiting for Speed Sense. Press <Enter> twice to continue.
-----------------------------------------------

CONFIGURATION INITIALIZATION FAILED:
Invalid Product Number in Config File

Press any key to continue

If I try to reset the switch nothing changes. I can't go back to the ROM-mode (Or can I somehow?) to import a new image...

ReadMe-File from the new version (Q1167) I updated:

Spoiler

*** Configuration Compatibility Caution ***

If you enable some new features, the config file will
NOT be backward-compatible with older software versions.
Before updating to this new software version, be sure to
back up your current config file!

Please follow "Best Practices for Software Updates"
in the Basic Operation Guide for your switch.

Attached are screenshots of my console output...

I hope that someone can help

Re: Import switch configuration with xmodem - failure

Trash the incompatible configuration file with a factory reset, then setup the switch again?

Re: Import switch configuration with xmodem - failure

Hello

After several attempts I could reset the switch and update it with another image to the newest version.

Maybe I should send it in...I don't want to play russian roulette with this one...

Thank you for the link you posted and the time you spend helping me!
