Slow fibre connection between 2 switches

Hello all,

I was wondering if you can advise why my fibre connection between two switches shows only 1000 Mbps.

Both switches are around 200 meters away from each other. Switch 1 is HP Switch 5406zl (J8697A). Switch 2 is 2910al-24G-PoE. I thought I can expect at least 10000Mbps link per port.

Re: Slow fibre connection between 2 switches

Dear Eric99,

You expect too much from SFP Transceivers. They are really giving you the maximum correct link speed they are engineered to. To reach 10Gbps you need to enter into the SFP+ world.

Short answer: no support of any SFP+ Transceiver (10Gbps=10000Mbps) on your peer switch HP ProCurve you are on a dead end road.

Long answer: you NEED a particular module (four 10Gbps SFP+ ports...please notice the "+") on HP ProCurve 5406zl're just using SFP Transceivers (1Gbps=1000Mbps) on SFP Ports of a 20+4 Module...which is not suitable to support any SFP+ Transceiver (like the J9150A that is a LC Short Range).

So you links are OK from the speed standpoint...considering the SFP capabilities you have on both ends. The step to 10Gbps requires an upgrade from SFP to SFP+ (involving not only Transceivers...but also the ports' capabilities provided by involved switches).

A suitable module on HP ProCurve 5406zl would be the four SFP+ ports HP ProCurve 4-Port 10GbE SFP+ zl Module (J9309A) which provide and support SFP+...instead it seems to me that you're just using the HP ProCurve Switch zl 20-Port 10/100/1000 + 4-Port Mini-GBIC Module (J8705A)...which provide and support only SFP.
