correct way to connect 2 Switches via 1xUplink

Hi all,

i'm a newbie, and i hope you can help!

My settings, are 1 x2920 , 1x2530, 1xFirewall.
VLAN 1,2,100.

Now i want get it working all together with VLANs.

1. VLANs
Is it simpelst and easy way just to config Ports, (for example VLAN1 untagged-1-10 // VLAN2 untagged 11-20 // VLAN 100 -21-23 // UPLINK Port 24)

2. Uplink Port 24
- i dont know whats is the common way to connect 2 switches via 1xSFP Cable.
- is it just the simple way to add via TAGGED VLAN1,2,100 to the UPlink Port 24?

3. Connect the Firewall to the switch
interface e0/0 in trunk mode so it can read all the tagged and untagged packets with is connected to firewall
but they speak i think here for cisco products, and in cisco trunk refers to an interface that is configurted to support mltiple VLANs right?
- do i have to configer Trunk, or is TRUNK ONLY IN HP for Link Aggregation (Static or via LACP). This is just confusing for me :-)

Thank you in advance.

Best Regards,
Fabian

Re: correct way to connect 2 Switches via 1xUplink

Hello

Like you arleady said, the word trunk witch Cisco is not the same as trunk with HP.

A trunk port witch Cisco means a port is carring multiple vlans over it. The term we use with HP(provision switches) is a tagged port. A trunk port on the hp provision switches means the bundling of multipe ports as one logical port and nothing else :)

So that said, what you have to do is confgure the ports between your firewall and your switches as tagged ports.

the config will be somthing like this:

vlan 1 untagged 24
vlan 2 tagged 24
vlan 100 tagged 24

However to make things complicated with the HP comware series, we will use the term trunk like Cisco does, but this is not the case with your kind of switches :)

Re: correct way to connect 2 Switches via 1xUplink

Hi!

thanks! this sorted out a lot of confusion!

After i read your posting, i also found a couple of minutes later in the CLI Reference Guide (which i can recommend), on Page 11 a note where they exactly explain this issue. ^^ anyway :-)

But i bought an HPE Aruba 2920 which confuses me again :P

command: show version Display 2 different Sofware OS for the 2920 and 2530.

First i thought ProVision is for internal HP Switches like ProCurve2920 ..and Comware is for integration of 3COM Productline?

Which is the different in the OS, is there some KB Article or stuff like this. Because with HPE Aruba there are then 3 Brands around....

how do i find out via command-line that its an ProCurve OS or an Comware OS? Because show-version just gives me WB... or YA Back....

Have a great Day!

Kind Regards,
Fabian

Wait, relax.

HPE acquired Aruba then some (not all) HP ProCurve (ProVision OS based) became Aruba (ArubaOS-Switch based) but the Software Branch naming system - Platform.xx.yy.zzzz(m) - remained basically the same (where the two initial letters or the one initial letter mean the Switch series product line known as the "Platform")...so you still have, just as example, a list (not complete) in which each Switch series (as example Platform "Aruba 2920") has its associated Platform lettering (as example "WB"):

  • 2530 (YA/YB)
  • 2620 (RA)
  • 2920 (WB)
  • 2930F (WC)
  • 3500/5400 (K)
  • 3800 (KA)
  • 3810/5400R (KB)

Once you see (as example) WB you already know you're speaking about an HP/Aruba 2920...a show flash or show version will tell you all you need to identify the OS version running on your Switch (branded HP ProCurve or Aruba).

For a more complete list (still not updated since it doesn't include latest released Aruba switches), read this:

Switch 6208M-SX and Switch 6308M-SX (Uses software version number only;
no alphabetic prefix. For example 07.6.04.)

The complete software version clearly is identified by the full string which includes the Platform lettering (see above), the xx.yy Major Release version number, the zzzz Minor Release version number and, eventually, the m suffix (m = Maintenace Branch)...no suffix means a CPE (Current Product Engineering branch) which, actually (since 15.16), is simply identified as - and called - Software General Availability (SW GA).

So a Switch which is running the WB.16.03.0003 (as example) means it is running on Aruba 2920 platform, 16.03 Major Release (which is - at present time - the latest), 0003 Minor Release (idem).

HPE Comware based Switch series follow another software numbering (and identification scheme) and use different (not too different) commands.

There is a nice Comware 5/7 vs Cisco IOS vs ProVision (now ArubaOS-Switch) CLI comparison guide edited by HPE (read about it here), I think you can download it here.

"how do i find out via command-line that its an ProCurve OS or an Comware OS? Because show-version just gives me WB... or YA Back...."

Log onto the cli.

Check out the available commands. If it's easy and intuitive it's Procurve.

If it uses "display.." instead of "show..." it's a 3COM switch.
