SureStore DAT 24x6e Autoloader does change slot automatically

Hello. I am using, for the first time, SureStore DAT 24x6e Autoloader with ARCServe 2000 on Windows 2000 Server. I assign all the 5 slots to GROUP0, but I was always prompted to insert a blank media into slot 1 when slot 1 was full. The Autoloader does not write to slot 2 automatically.
(I have already installed ArcServe Tape library)

How can I configure the Autoloader to change slot automatically once a slot is full? Would you please advise?

Have you checked to make sure you have LUN support enabled in the SCSI controller BIOS?

Re: SureStore DAT 24x6e Autoloader does change slot automatically

Dear Lewis,

Thank you very much for your response.

The followings are some observations:

-------------------------

Case 1: I have checked the SCSI bios multiple LUN support is "NO" (default
setting) for all the SCSI devices (including my HP Autoloader: SCSI ID #5).

Observation: The server shows the following 2 messages during boot up:
"Ch A, SCSI ID:5 HP C1537A 10.0"
"SCSI BIOS not installed"

---------------------------

Case 2: Then, I set bios multiple LUN support to "YES" for all the SCSI devices (from 0 to 15), and the Autoloader still doesn't write to slot 2 automatically.

Observation i): The server shows the following 3 messages during boot up:
"Ch A, SCSI ID:5"
"LUN:0 HP C1537A 10.0"
"LUN:1 HP C1557A 10.0"
"SCSI BIOS not installed"

Observation ii): ARCserve shows error log messages:
"E6300 Windows NT SCSI PORT Error [ABSL:2500 CMD:1Ah] SCSI Command Retry"
"E6300 Windows NT SCSI PORT Error [ABSL:2500 CMD:1Ah NT:1Fh 31]"

---------------------------

Case 3: Then, I set bios multiple LUN support to "YES" ONLY for SCSI ID #5 (the Autoloader), and the result is still the same.

Observation i): The server shows the following 3 messages during boot up:
"Ch A, SCSI ID:5"
"LUN:0 HP C1537A 10.0"
"LUN:1 HP C1557A 10.0"
"SCSI BIOS not installed"

Observation ii): ARCserve shows error log messages:
"E6300 Windows NT SCSI PORT Error [ABSL:2500 CMD:0h] SCSI Command Retry"
"E6300 Windows NT SCSI PORT Error [ABSL:2500 CMD:1Ah] SCSI Command Retry"
"E6300 Windows NT SCSI PORT Error [ABSL:2500 CMD:1Ah NT:1Fh 31]"

---------------------------

Is it normal to have message "SCSI BIOS not installed" in all the above cases?
(I have checked the "Host Adapter BIOS" is already enabled in the SCSI BIOS
Advanced Configuration menu).

Should I set Multiple LUN support for SCSI #5 (or #7) to "Yes" or "No"?

Please forgive me that I am new to using an Autoloader.

Looking forward to seeing your help.
Regards
Sam

Re: SureStore DAT 24x6e Autoloader does change slot automatically

Sam,
I know that normally if SCSI controller sees supported devices it should install its BIOS. BUT here is a good question - is this autoloader supported by this SCSI BIOS (note: not SCSI controller, but BIOS).
To understand if server sees autoloader correctly please try checking it with HP Library and Tape Tools ( http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg50128.html ). Run tests, update firmware. Please also check "autoloader option switch" at the rear of the unit. It should be set to "7". Good idea to check SCSI bus - cables, termination.

Re: SureStore DAT 24x6e Autoloader does change slot automatically

Sam, sorry... forgot to answer you question. It should be "Yes" (LUN support should be turned on) because both internal devices - drive and autoloader robot - working under same SCSI Id, and they recognised by LUN Ids.

Re: SureStore DAT 24x6e Autoloader does change slot automatically

hi
just to clarify this point,
"SCSI BIOS not installed", is a normal message in scsi controllers.
You need to enable Controller BIOS only if you have to BOOT from tis controller, in fact the BIOS is desiganted to manage the boot sequence and pass the controll over the Boot servor of the Hard Disks.
If you have a Tape, or a non bootable hdd, or something other like scanner, it doesn't matter if Bios is enable or not, the attached unit will allays be managed and passed to the related drivers.
In fact in the past, lots of "low cost" SCSI controller where manufactured without Bios on board, the only limitation was that thes couldn't be used to boot from.

You must reformat and name each tape the same in order to have a job span to the next job. Arcserver doesn't recognize seperate tape names for a group.
